About us

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) was founded in Los Angeles, California, in 1974 by a group of engineers employed by the city of Los Angeles. Their objective was to form a national organization of professional engineers to serve as role models in the Hispanic community. The concept of networking was the key basis for the organization. SHPE quickly established two student chapters to begin the network that would grow to encompass the nation as well as reach countries outside the United States. Today, SHPE sustains a strong network of professional and student chapters throughout the nation. MISSION: SHPE changes lives by empowering the Hispanic community to realize its fullest potential and to impact the world through STEM awareness, access, support and development. Vision VISION: SHPE's vision is a world where Hispanics are highly valued and influential as the leading innovators, scientists, mathematicians, and engineers. CAREERS: SHPE's Career Center is the leading online career center, the career hub for Hispanic STEM professionals, serving more than 36,000 members. It’s where candidates go to find the right science, technology, engineering and math jobs and where employers go to find highly-qualified STEM talent. A Memorable Experience at the 50th Anniversary SHPE National Convention 🚀 I am incredibly grateful to our exceptional Dean, Bruce Berdanier of PNW CES, as well as Dr. Chandramouli Viswanathan, Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department, and Dr. Adam Rengstorf, Head of Chemistry and Physics, for their steadfast support. Their commitment enabled me, our Faculty Advisor Víctor Romero Gómez, and my fellow SHPE PNW board members—Sergio Bueno Gutiérrez, Isabella Jalil, Alejandro Padilla, and Juan Martin Jersonsky—to attend this landmark 50th Anniversary SHPE National Convention in Anaheim, CA. At the convention, we had the chance to connect with professionals from some of the largest companies offering opportunities across internships, part-time, and full-time positions. This event was an invaluable opportunity to expand our networks, meet people from diverse regions of the United States, and gain insights from leaders in the field. I’m inspired by the powerful conversations and connections made, and excited to take these experiences back to Purdue Northwest as we continue to empower and uplift underrepresented communities in STEM. Thank you to everyone who helped make this opportunity possible! 🙌 #SHPE #SHPENationalConvention #STEM #DiversityInSTEM #Networking #ProfessionalDevelopment #PNW #Engineering #LatinosInSTEM #FutureLeaders #CareerOpportunities #Empowerment

✨ SHPE National Convention 2024 Recap ✨ Reflecting on an unforgettable SHPE convention! This year was filled with incredible experiences, meaningful connections, and cherished reunions: 🍽️ Started my day with an inspiring breakfast hosted by Bank of America and Rewriting the Code, then visited the Rewriting the Code booth, where I felt truly welcomed—always grateful for their support and commitment to diversity in tech! 👥 Reconnected with my fellow summer interns: Natalie Hodnett, Ishan Gohil, Sofanyas Genene, Nabeel Mukati, Tofik Hamscho from American Express and my previous campus programs recruiter Naomi Hillsman, some of my favorite people who made this summer memorable. I also had the chance to catch up with old friends from Charlotte, NC, and it felt like no time had passed Alexia Medina Guadarrama. 🌆 Explored LA with my SHPE chapter and attended a networking event with Goldman Sachs, where I met a fellow Colombian engineer. It was inspiring to learn more about Goldman Sachs’ investments and traditions, especially from someone with a similar background! 💼 Had the privilege of attending an event with Capital One and meeting Julianna Calderon, whose dedication to investing in students is so empowering. As my last convention as an undergrad, this experience was truly special. Grateful for the community, mentorship, and friendships that SHPE has brought into my life. Here’s to continued growth and many more opportunities ahead! #SHPE2024 #LatinasInSTEM #Networking

During the month of October I had the opportunity to attend and present my research: “Repurposing Plastics into Membranes for Redox Flow Batteries” at two conferences and even won an award at one of them!! Early October, I traveled to Hawaii (first time ever in Hawaii) for the ECS - The Electrochemical Society PRiME meeting. I had an amazing time learning from experts in my field, building new connections, and of course getting some sight seeing in too! Late October, I attended SHPE National Convention where I got to reconnect with my SHPE familia who has been a tremendous support system for me since undergrad! I also had a chance to present my work and I won 3rd place in the STEM Graduate Student Oral Presentation Competition!!! Presenting my technical work at both of these conferences is a significant milestone in my PhD journey and growth! Fun fact, I was initially mad/scared when my ECS talk got accepted. I submitted an abstract hoping it would get rejected. Not even the thought of being in Hawaii could get me excited for presenting. However, I’m glad I pushed myself beyond my comfort zone and allowed myself to be mentored into being a better presenter. I look forward to future conferences where I can continue to connect with and be inspired by extraordinary scientists and engineers!

ScholarSHPE applications are open! Lack of funds is one of the most challenging reasons facing Hispanic students pursuing their degrees. So SHPE offers thousands of reasons to ensure their members DO reach graduation – over a million to be exact. With over 1,500 scholarships awarded since 2018 totaling over $5,000,000, SHPE is actively narrowing the gap in the Hispanic STEM education pipeline. Apply by November 15! https://lnkd.in/drxQTKbQ
