About us
SITELAB urban studio is a San Francisco-based strategic design firm focused on using research & visualization to create great places, through big plans and small interventions. With backgrounds in architecture and urban design, Laura Crescimano and Evan Rose founded SITELAB in 2012. The studio operates at the intersection of analysis and inspiration, with projects that range from strategic planning & programming to urban design and public outreach. In all projects, SITELAB transforms information–from spreadsheets to people’s stories (and in most cases, both)–into plans for action.

We’d like to thank Urban Land Institute for their recognition of SITELAB and our downtown revitalization work in their recent piece, “Rekindling San Francisco’s Downtown by Reviving Its Streets.” As the urban design lead of the Downtown SF Public Realm Action Plan — and pilot project, Landing at Leidesdorff in the Financial District — it’s great to see this work so thoughtfully highlighted. These efforts, as noted by our partners at Downtown SF Partnership, underscore our ongoing commitment to diversifying the public realm to continue serving our communities in new ways. For the past 4 years we've enjoyed collaborating with CMG Landscape Architecture, Pathways Climate Institute, and Jacobs on the San Francisco Waterfront Flood Study. The Embarcadero (otherwise known as Reach 2) with its density of uses, transit, and cultural significance presents some of the most challenging conditions for an urban adaptation project. 🌊 SITELAB, along with the rest of the project team, has devised innovative and flexible adaptations that maintain the critical functionality of the Embarcadero while also creating an opportunity for an expanded and enhanced public realm.
Reach 2 of San Francisco Waterfront Flood Study's Draft Plan is the Embarcadero, which focuses on raising the seawall at the shoreline edge with a gradual transition to connect the shoreline to the existing city elevation across the Embarcadero, maintaining the city’s connection to the waterfront and adapting historic wharves and buildings. The Draft Plan is part of the San Francisco Waterfront Flood Study by the City of San Francisco and U.S. Army Corp of Engineers (USACE), which analyzes the coastal flood risk and effects of sea level rise for the 7.5 miles of waterfront from Aquatic Park to Heron’s Head Park. It is a critical milestone in San Francisco’s continued, long-term efforts to defend our waterfront against flood risk and sea level rise, while also enhancing the seismic stability of our waterfront’s flood management structures and complementing waterfront improvements. Exciting transformations are underway at Pier 70. SITELAB is proud to be part of Brookfield Properties’ historic revitalization of the underutilized waterfront space into a vibrant mixed-use site. Our work as the lead urban designer and master planner is centered around continuing the site’s industrial legacy and infusing the Dogpatch neighborhood’s ingenuity to support a new hub for modern makers and innovators. We love to see the growing trend of Adaptive Reuse, revitalizing underutilized spaces and repurposing materials continue! ♻ Discover more about the plans for Pier 70 in the San Francisco Chronicle: https://lnkd.in/gWSbHiZT

As Union Square Alliance (Business Improvement District) looks toward the future of Powell Street, our collaborative design vision with Field Operations prioritizes “the interconnection between urban design and the revitalization of underutilized areas,” to create vibrant environments that attract residents, commuters, and visitors alike. To further stimulate economic activity for the district, the vision not only pays homage to the iconic cable car, but encourages public spaces with diverse programming, capable of accommodating food carts, performance sets, and market stalls. This flexibility ensures that Powell Street can remain a lively, ever-evolving space that supports diverse generations to come. 🚃 Discover the details around the proposed redesign, now featured on ArchDaily: https://lnkd.in/gxXAyEht #UrbanDesign #PowellStreet
