About us
The Society of Professional Journalists is dedicated to the perpetuation of a free press as the cornerstone of our nation and our liberty. To ensure that the concept of self-government outlined by the U.S. Constitution remains a reality into future centuries, the American people must be well informed in order to make decisions regarding their lives, and their local and national communities. It is the role of journalists to provide this information in an accurate, comprehensive, timely and understandable manner. It is the mission of the Society of Professional Journalists: — To promote this flow of information. — To maintain constant vigilance in protection of the First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and of the press. — To stimulate high standards and ethical behavior in the practice of journalism. — To foster excellence among journalists. — To inspire successive generations of talented individuals to become dedicated journalists. — To encourage diversity in journalism. — To be the pre-eminent, broad-based membership organization for journalists. — To encourage a climate in which journalism can be practiced freely.

"In her new book, “Reporting the Nuremberg Trials: How Journalists Covered Live Nazi Trials & Executions“ (published by Pen and Sword History), journalist and author Noel-Marie Fletcher shares one of the least-known portions of one of the most thoroughly reported stories in human history. Namely, how the legions of reporters went about the business of telling this vast, complex, and at times, horrendously graphic tale while enduring everything from government interference to hostility from the German population." https://bit.ly/3Y1XxJw

"Student journalists in North Carolina continued to work hard to provide essential information to their communities — and it shows in what they were able to produce despite the challenges posed by the hurricane. Among them was Anjolina Fantaroni, broadcast news director at Elon News Network. She traveled about three and a half hours from Elon University to report from the mountains." https://bit.ly/3zE0UNK

"The pressures on the press in the region — Palestinian, Israeli and foreign — are of course, astronomical after a year of nonstop, difficult work. Beyond the physical threats, many have also faced mental health challenges from witnessing horrific violence both in person and from the vast documentation streaming into their newsrooms every hour. Then there’s relentless criticism of their work." https://cnn.it/4dGR2R0

With upcoming elections, SPJ President Ashanti Blaize-Hopkins discusses the importance of covering them ethically in this piece for Quill: "By positioning the SPJ Code of Ethics as our north star and reaffirming our commitment to the principles of truth, accuracy, transparency, independence, context and harm minimization, we can uphold our duty to the public and contribute to a healthier, more informed electorate." https://bit.ly/4dlh2RG

There’s a relatively rapid trend toward prohibiting staff members from communicating with journalists without reporting to some authority, often public information officers. This makes it much more difficult for reporters to uncover important stories like storage areas that might contain illegally-held pathogens; or young children drinking lead in their water; or insider trading with the help of a federal employee. Learn more about what the SPJ Freedom of Information Committee is doing about it.

"Building bridges of trust from scratch is challenging, even when reporting on your own community. I spent four months immersing myself in Chinatown, following seniors from ballroom dancing studios to senior centers and their homes, recording their lives for TIME on how NYC Chinatown seniors combat social isolation during the pandemic. Though most seniors spoke different dialects and may not have understood my Mandarin, spending time with the community and taking a hands-on approach allowed me to gain their trust and tell their stories authentically." https://bit.ly/3Y2PPiu
