Sonoma Land Trust currently holds 47 conservation easements that protect over 8,000 acres of land throughout Sonoma County. Each year, our staff monitors every easement property, ensuring the land’s use complies with the easement's terms. Monitoring takes time and careful attention. It includes a visit to the property to check for any new activities or changes, making notes, and keeping detailed records that include photos, maps, and reports. These activities are in close partnership with the easement landowner who regularly joins our staff on the monitoring visits, communicates with our team about any changes on the land, helps address issues, and find solutions. This regular contact helps staff stay in tune with what is going on out at the properties and helps avoid any potential violations related to the terms of the easement. It's important work, and our staff enjoys having the opportunity and privilege of connecting with neighbors while visiting beautiful, biodiverse, ecologically significant land all over the county! #SonomaLandTrust #conservationeasements #protectnature

As a land-based organization, it’s essential for Sonoma Land Trust to embrace the responsibility to listen, learn from, and collaborate with local tribal groups, centering their knowledge, care, stewardship, and cultural and traditional connections to the land that have been in place and practice for millennia, and persist today. This Indigenous Peoples' Day, we invite you to join us in finding ways to connect with and support Native communities and organizations in your area. The CALIFORNIA INDIAN MUSEUM & CULTURAL CENTER is an incredible local resource to learn about the history, culture, and contemporary life of California Native communities, and Redbud Resource Group is a Native-led, women-led nonprofit with programs and resources to build bridges between Native and non-Native communities. Our staff and board members have been fortunate to work with Redbud several times, and we highly recommend their Going Beyond Land Acknowledgements training, which helps groups and individuals build respectful and effective partnerships with Native communities. It’s gratifying to see how quickly the land responds to Good Fire. With a multi-phased plan, we are seeing the results we had hoped for. This photo story shows how our Laufenburg Ranch Preserve responded to prescribed fire treatments. The photos reveal successful reduction in the density of small trees and shrubs with minimal impacts on larger trees. This clearing eliminates competition between trees for resources, leading to healthier forests. The prescribed burn also reduced the dense ground brush and dry vegetation that can act as kindling for a wildfire, reducing the risk of one spreading in the future. The Red-tailed hawk, the most common hawk species in Sonoma County, is built for the hunt with a hooked beak, sharp talons, and keen eyesight. These carnivorous predators weigh an average of just 3-6 pounds, their light weight enabling them to fly between 20-40mph and reach up to 120 mph when diving for prey like small mammals, reptiles, and fish. For a chance to spot this and other birds of prey on their southern migration along the Pacific Flyway, register for one of our upcoming Raptor Walks with California Certified Naturalist Larry Broderick: https://lnkd.in/gztd-DnJ #redtailedhawk #birdmigration #SonomaCounty

A plan for the removal of the last dam on Stuart Creek by our partners Audubon Canyon Ranch is in the works and, with it, the hope that new generations of juvenile steelhead may be attracted to their ideal habitat! This project follows our own removal of three human-constructed barriers on the lower reaches of Stuart Creek in 2014, and Stewardship Program Manager Joe Plaugher shares the project’s success: “The reconstructed channels have easily handled large rain events without flooding and fish would be able to move upstream easily.” ACR hopes to soon replace this final dam with a section that mimics natural streams, with the right water flow and sediment movement to help fish and other aquatic life access a half-mile of safe, cooler refuges for aquatic life during periods of warm weather or drought. In August, we reached a major milestone: the one-year anniversary of the Lakeville Creek Stage Zero restoration project! Find out how it's doing and learn about the intense atmospheric rivers that put the side to the test in this update from the field. Associate Director of Stewardship Julian Meisler explains, “Think of your garden and then taking a fire hose to it before anything has taken root. . . it is going to cause some issues.” Watch how resilience takes shape and a few of the lessons our team learned in this post-winter report on the progress of this Stage Zero project: https://ow.ly/4jz450TEsyA #StageZeroRestoration #LakevilleCreek #SonomaLandTrust #LandRestoration
