Sonoma Water has announced plans to update its climate change models for the Russian River watershed using the latest available data. The agency will partner with Flint HydroScience, LLC to incorporate new climate projections into its Basin Characterization Model, which is used to estimate stream flows and analyze potential impacts to water supplies. "This updated modeling is critical for planning the future of our water resources," said David Rabbitt, Chair of the Sonoma Water Board of Directors. "It will help us understand how climate change may affect operations at Lake Mendocino, Lake Sonoma and throughout the Russian River system. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gM3cjxPX #climatemodels

Today, Sonoma Water’s Board of Directors received a report on the emergency repairs to a retaining wall and channel liners in Washington Creek in Petaluma. Construction crews are on site for proactive repairs including part of the flood channel retaining wall that needed reinforcement. During the week of Sept. 30, both the retaining wall and channel liners were completed. Sonoma Water survey staff continued to monitor the adjacent property owner’s ground conditions. No settling or negative effects from construction are present. For the next several weeks, the concrete will be curing and cleanup activities will continue. Current permits allow for in-channel work through Oct. 31. If the project’s in-channel activities are not anticipated to be completed by that date, Sonoma Water will submit a request for an extension. This engineered channel was originally constructed in the 1970s. Sonoma Water owns, or has easements to maintain, approximately 75 miles of engineered flood control channels in our service area. #FloodControl #Petaluma #Infrastructure #EmergencyRepairs

Our employees were able to share personal experiences and insights about career paths in wastewater. Back in the classroom, this group of students will also participate in Sonoma Water's high school education program about careers in the water industry.
