As we continue to see significant advancements in digital identity, Gen Z is at the forefront of a growing trend: moving away from physical wallets and fully embracing smartphone-based verifiable digital credentials (VDC). This shift is not just about convenience—it's about enhanced privacy, stronger security, and greater control over personal information. In states like New York and California, digital driver’s licenses are becoming the norm and businesses that don’t adapt to this new way of verifying identity risk being left behind. But how do these VDCs work, and what sets them apart from traditional IDs? For businesses and individuals alike, now is the time to understand and embrace this change. In our latest blog post, we explore the benefits of digital identity, and why this transformation will redefine how we interact with credentials in both the physical and digital world. Last month, Wayne Chang presented at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)'s Workshop on Privacy-Enhancing Cryptography on our proposed approach for how verifiable digital credential systems (like mobile driver’s licenses) can mitigate the privacy risk of linkability using Provably Forgotten Signatures. Wayne discussed why this topic matters now, the technical details of how it could work, and the benefits and considerations of implementing Provably Forgotten Signatures, a privacy-enhancing cryptographic approach that ensures a user's digital signatures, used in verifiable digital credentials (VDCs), are securely forgotten by the issuing authority after issuance.
