Losing an ID is a major barrier to accessing essential services, particularly for unhoused individuals or those in crisis. Replacing physical IDs can take weeks, an eternity for someone needing food or shelter. Digital identities offer a more secure and practical alternative. States like California and Utah are leading the way with mobile driver's licenses (mDLs) and blockchain-based solutions, allowing individuals to quickly restore access to critical services. These digital IDs can be wiped and restored if a phone is lost, reducing the risk of identity theft. However, as governments adopt digital ID systems, they must consider the needs of vulnerable populations. Solutions must be designed to support individuals with limited access to technology. Learn about some of the approaches being developed to ensure that digital identity solutions are equitable, secure, and accessible to everyone, particularly those facing challenges with traditional forms of identification: https://lnkd.in/gDyhZXkd

Today, SpruceID CEO Wayne Chang presented to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) our thoughts on using provably forgotten signatures to add privacy to digital identity. A key challenge we’re tackling is linkability — the risk that a person could be profiled through repeated use of digital credentials, leading to potential surveillance or collusion. Our approach? Instead of overhauling current systems, we’re upgrading them to prevent this correlation and ensure data stays private. Our proposed solution is designed to work seamlessly with widely-used standards like ISO/IEC 18013-5 mDL, SD-JWT, and W3C Verifiable Credentials, while also aligning with strict security requirements. Plus, it's built to support future technologies, such as post-quantum cryptography (PQC) and zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs), unlocking privacy benefits today and tomorrow. Learn more about the topics we discussed in the presentation and our proposed approach to tackling this issue in our recently published piece on provably forgotten signatures: https://lnkd.in/g6epxCUt

As the use of digital identity solutions becomes more widespread, the risk of surveillance grows. We believe privacy must be central to these systems, ensuring that users are protected from unwanted data tracking. In our latest blog, we explore how cryptographic techniques like Private Information Retrieval (PIR) and Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs) can shield user data, preventing surveillance by both legitimate and malicious entities. These methods allow for digital identity verifications without exposing private information. Learn more about SpruceID’s approach to safeguarding privacy in digital identity systems in this full post: https://lnkd.in/g9u-au-2

Imagine being able to manage your health data or professional credentials effortlessly. For example, sharing medical records with a doctor under specific conditions and revoking access when it’s no longer needed. In our blog, we discuss Personal Data Licensing: a system that empowers users to control data sharing and monitor or rescind access whenever they choose—like being able to securely share medical records with a clear timeline for deletion. Learn how this shift could reshape data privacy: https://lnkd.in/gyWAseeK
