In this post from The Gottman Institute, they detail eight guiding rules to have a meaningful conversation with your partner. The rules include validating emotions, taking turns, expressing affection, and more. See below for all eight ways you can have a stress-reducing conversation with your partner.
This exercise draws on the technique of “active listening.” The goal of active listening is to listen (not just hear) to the speaker’s words with empathy and without judgment. You certainly won’t be feeling emotional attraction to your partner if you feel like they aren’t listening to you. This is all well and good, but when applied in couples’ therapy, it often fails because couples are asked to use it when they are airing their gripes with each other. "Consider the world where you want to live a year from now. What would the world look like if you take the action? What would it look like if you did not take the action?" Both are great questions to ask. The stigma associated with mental health results in people feeling embarrassed and reluctant to seek help. It only serves as an obstacle that prevents people from getting support at the optimal time they need it and would most easily benefit from it. It is important to not wait until things are really bad to start therapy or ignore issues that can be more easily addressed in earlier stages. Think of it this way: nobody waits a really long time to see their primary care doctors, goes a lot for an extended period of time, with the assumption that once they're done, they'll never need to go again-- that's silly. Therapy isn't what you do when you fail. Therapy is healthcare and what you do when you refuse to fail-- it's a tool people utilize to pursue success. Reaching out for help can make an impact in your life. At St. Charles Counseling, we encourage seeking help for your mental well-being sooner rather than later, as you would for any health issue. Therapy can provide you space needed to confront any issues you may be facing in your life, and the tools needed to move forward.
