It's Independence Day II! Today marks the 34th anniversary of the signing of groundbreaking legislation upholding the civil rights of Americans with disabilities. Disabled people worked for decades to reach this milestone, including our founders Max and Colleen Starkloff, founding SDI board member Judy Heumann, and Rev. Harold Wilke, pictured here accepting a pen from President Bush after the signing with his toes. Wilke was born without arms on a farm in Washington, Missouri, and had to fight discrimination in school, in religious institutions, and in society throughout his life.
