This month, we celebrate the one-year anniversary of independent contractor agent Katie Gonzales! After teaching for three years post-graduation, Katie began to experience burn out. Seeking a change, Katie took her transferable skill set into a sales job but felt lost in her career as she faced the ups and downs of the pandemic. “I stumbled across a State Farm agent in Colorado Springs who became a phenomenal example for me as a woman entrepreneur and inspired me to explore the role of a State Farm team member. As a military spouse, I had to relocate but served as a team member in two different agent offices. In 2022, my husband and I decided to make our way back to my hometown of Waseca, Minnesota, where I launched my agent office.” Katie's perseverance in times of uncertainty allowed her to discover new ways to fulfill her passion. "With the State Farm agent opportunity, I found a career that reignited my passion for teaching. This last year has been the most rewarding experience. It is not lost on me the role my team played in my first year running smoothly, using their 100 combined years of experience to serve collaboratively. Getting the chance to come back to my hometown and contribute to the next generation was a full circle moment for me – I am extremely grateful for the opportunity." Wishing you continued success, Katie! Thank you for being a #GoodNeighbor in your community.

This month, we're celebrating the 40-year anniversary of independent contractor agent DeVon Hudson’s office in Decatur, Georgia! DeVon's beginning with State Farm was not a clear path to becoming an agent, as he already had his sights set on taking his finance degree to work on Wall Street. It was by working at the State Farm corporate office mailroom, to pay his way through college, that DeVon was introduced to the agent opportunity for the first time. "One day, I was asked if I ever considered being a State Farm agent. I was hesitant at first, but over time, I discovered the strong possibilities of this career and the question then shifted from ‘what’ to ‘where.’" DeVon reflects on his four-decade career during Black Business Month and his appreciation of those who’ve inspired him along the way. “Prior to interviewing for my agent office, I met with a Black agent in Georgia who helped me to fully understand the possibilities, opportunities and impact I could have as a Black business owner with this career. His insight confirmed that this was the best decision for me. “State Farm has been very good to me and my family. When people ask how I’ve stayed so long with one company, my answer is always the same — I love what I do. I get to help people in their time of need, build relationships, all while watching customers and their children achieve their dreams. Having the backing of a financially strong company allows me to service customer’s needs with confidence. From the people I have met to the experiences I’ve had; I am truly grateful." Wishing you continued success, DeVon! Thank you for being a good neighbor in your community. #BlackBusinessMonth

Years later, Candace was introduced to new possibilities by a former high school band teacher, who had embarked on a new career path with State Farm corporate. "This connection opened doors for me, allowing me to embark on the greatest journey of a lifetime as a State Farm independent contractor agent. Later, I had the chance to join the State Farm corporate actuarial team. I ultimately decided to return to my roots as a State Farm agent, opening an agent office in my hometown. While actuarial science will always hold a special place in my heart, I discovered a new love for being an agent.” Candace emphasizes the significance of connections as a State Farm agent. "Coming from a military household, I grew up with a deep respect for leadership. I was taught that true leaders hold the honor of bringing out the best in others.
