The Casualty Actuarial Society Election voting process has officially begun! Since embarking on this journey as a candidate for the CAS Board, I've dedicated myself to understanding the needs and concerns of our members. I've interviewed and conversed with more than a dozen members and candidates at various stages of their careers, all to better represent our current and future members. There are two priorities that I would like to tackle as a Board Member: 1. Building Skills for the Future: The CAS should continue to expand our research and education efforts on technical analytics so that Actuaries continue to be sought-after experts in solving technical challenges. Furthermore, the CAS should bolster our education resources and content on how Actuaries can collaborate with other business functions, such as Claims or Underwriting, to drive broader strategic business decisions. 2. Optimizing Candidate Experience: This year, all three Ask the Candidates questions were related to exams and education for candidates. Given the unfortunate outcome of the May 1 exam sitting, this result is fully warranted. I am deeply committed to driving meaningful change on this front, and I want to ensure that our future members are fully supported and set up for success as they continue to pursue their membership with the CAS. Story Time: When I was a senior in high school, my dad asked me about my next steps: college, technical school, or a full-time job? I wanted to go to college but wasn't sure what to study. My dad supported me and offered advice: choose a degree useful in the grocery industry (people are always going to need to eat), the medical industry (people are always going to get sick), or the insurance industry (people are always going to need to protect their belongings and assets, and some insurance is government-mandated). I applied to three universities (UF, FSU, and UCF) and got accepted to all. I chose the University of Central Florida, saving money by living with one of my older brothers (he was an Industrial Engineer at Disney) and earning a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Management. After graduation, I pursued my dad's advice and secured a job in the Property and Casualty insurance industry as a Claim Information Manager, leading to a successful career and a stable future for my family. Unfortunately, that stable future has been disrupted recently with a re-organization and expense cuts at my company resulting in being laid-off. Now, I am revisiting this advice and strategically planning out my next step. Moral: Making strategic and practical decisions when planning for the future is essential. Listen to those with experience and collect knowledge to build a strong foundation for that future. Being open to advice and making informed decisions can lead to fulfilling opportunities, professional growth, and personal growth. What's the best advice you've received in your life or career? In my last post, I briefly mentioned the SOA and CAS. Are you considering which career path to take between the CAS and SOA? The Society of Actuaries (SOA) and the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) are the two main professional organizations for Actuaries in North America, they also have recognition and influence in other regions. Key differences: Work Sector: SOA: Specializes in life insurance, health insurance, pensions, retirement benefits, enterprise risk management, finance and investments. CAS: Specializes in non-life insurance and focuses on property and casualty (P&C) insurance, which includes auto, home, and liability insurance. Exams and Credentials: SOA: Offers multiple fellowship tracks, allowing actuaries to specialize in different areas such as Corporate Finance, Investment, Individual Life and Annuities, Retirement Benefits, Group and Health, and General Insurance. Credentials: Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) and Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA). CAS: Has a single track for property and casualty insurance, meaning all CAS actuaries take the same set of exams. Focuses on topics like ratemaking, reserving, and predictive modeling in property and casualty insurance. Credentials: Associate of the Casualty Actuarial Society (ACAS) and Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS). Salary and Demand: SOA: Covers a broader range of industries, which might offer more diverse job opportunities. CAS: P&C actuaries tend to have slightly higher average salaries, possibly due to higher demand or the locations of major P&C companies. Here Are My thoughts to assist you in determining which path to take. The choice between CAS and SOA depends on the industry you wish to work in. If you're focused on property and casualty insurance, CAS is the preferred route. For life, health, pensions, and financial services, SOA is more suitable. Ultimately, your decision should align with your personal interests, career goals, and the specific area of actuarial work you want to pursue. #SOA #CAS

“Take a job with the State or take a job in insurance?” 10 years ago I created a pros and cons list as I was trying to decide which direction to take my career in (many thanks to my mentor Solskin Gomez-Krogh!). Here’s what I recall: If I work for the State, I’ll have security, a pension, good benefits etc. If I want to grow I have to wait in line for the next position to open up, meaning that person has to quit, retire, get fired, or die. (Don’t mean to be so blunt here but this is how it was said to me😅). If I work in insurance, I will be able to help businesses and individuals protect their livelihoods and create decade long relationships. But, it’s going to be tough, it’s going to be like a roller coaster with highs and lows. You will get out what you put in, and you’re basically running your own business. I will admit, I’m a little bit of a thrill seeker. I also didn’t want anyone to have control over my growth…so here we are, challenge accepted! It has been an INCREDIBLE ride these last 10 years in insurance. I love the never ending learning, the challenges that take me out of my comfort zone, my incredible team at The Horton Group , and last but not least, my impressively ambitious clients!!
