"It is easy for me to remember my anniversaries. I began my career at State Farm 9 days before I was married." This month, Scott, a technology analyst, is celebrating two important milestone anniversaries. 15 years ago, family influenced his decision to apply. "My aunt and uncle were agents in Missouri and my wife worked in the claims department. Because of them, I was familiar with the company's stability and reputation for career opportunities." According to Scott, family continues to influence his decision today. "I have met the greatest people working for this company. I can attest to State Farm's strong brand, great benefits, and opportunity for growth. But it's the people, the State Farm family, that make all of that work." Attending a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) can have a profound impact on personal and professional development for students. "Choosing to attend an HBCU was the best decision that I made over 20 years ago. I still experience returns from that decision today." Janet, an underwriter, is excited about HBCU week. As an HBCU alumni, she has firsthand experience of the impact these institutions can have on students. "HBCUs strongly promote inclusiveness and diversity. As a student, I learned to look beyond myself, engage with my community, and support others." Janet draws parallels to her experience as a student and an employee. "The overarching theme at most HBCUs is family and community. I think the same can be said about State Farm. We embody our motto, 'Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.'" Allister Primo reflects on his experience of attending a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) and how it shaped his path to becoming a State Farm independent contractor agent. As a computer engineer major at Hampton University (HU), Allister found himself immersed in a variety of activities. He was recruited on scholarship to join the marching band and participated in the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). He became a proud member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc and served on the National Panhellenic Council board. "My time at Hampton University was truly the best four years of my life, making lifelong friendships that helped pave my way. Among these connections were two HU alumni who had become State Farm agents. Their enthusiastic perspective of the agent opportunity and the meaningful impact they have on people's lives inspired me to explore this path for myself. "Attending an HBCU instilled core values of leadership, communication, and integrity that I was able to transfer into my professional career. As a State Farm agent, I have the opportunity to lead a team, build meaningful relationships with customers, and ultimately make a difference in the communities I serve." Roger, a manager in administrative services, emphasizes the importance of recognizing the value various generations have on the workforce. "I grew up in Bloomington, Illinois, and my father was a 35-year employee for State Farm. Because of him, I was aware of the company and culture. The work he did inspired me to pursue a career with the organization and get involved with our employee resource groups (ERG)." As co-lead for the My Generation ERG, Roger uses his experiences and creativity to support programs and initiatives designed to educate employees on generational topics. "Intergenerational Month presents another opportunity to encourage associates to meet and learn about other people’s experiences and grow their network.
