About us
Established in 1907, Sunbeam is one of Oklahoma’s longest-serving nonprofits. Sunbeam helps over 4,000 Central Oklahoma children and families learn, grow, and thrive each year through early childcare and education, with specialized wraparound support for entire family systems, including mental health services, and programming for foster families and grandparents raising their grandchildren. Through its nationally-recognized early childhood program, Sunbeam prepares babies and toddlers to enter kindergarten through full-day, year-round early care and education. Its traditional (legacy) foster care program provides temporary care and supportive services in a home environment for children. Finally, to provide robust wraparound care, sliding-scale mental health services are available to Sunbeam’s clients and the community. Through the mental health program, Sunbeam provides individual, family, group, and play therapy along with support groups and psycho-educational classes.

🌟 We are thrilled to announce that Sunbeam has been awarded a $30,000 grant from the OG&E Foundation to enhance STEAM Family and Community Engagement at our Early Education Centers! 🌟 For our babies and toddlers, exploring STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) is crucial for building lifelong skills. These early activities foster curiosity, persistence, communication, problem-solving, and flexible thinking. This generous grant from OG&E supports early learning and helps close the opportunity gap for young children at Sunbeam’s early education centers. Thank you, OG&E Foundation! 🙌

Indigenous Peoples' Day holds profound significance in Oklahoma, a state deeply intertwined with Native American history and culture. Home to 39 federally recognized tribes, Oklahoma's landscape and identity have been shaped by the resilience and contributions of its Indigenous peoples. Celebrating Indigenous Peoples' Day honors the rich traditions, cultures and histories of these tribes, while also recognizing the injustices they have faced, such as forced relocation and cultural erasure. For the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits, this day serves as an opportunity to uplift Native voices, promote social justice and advocate for the inclusion and empowerment of Indigenous communities within the nonprofit sector and beyond. Wilma Mankiller (1945-2010) was a Native American activist, community organizer, and social worker. She made history as the first woman elected as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. In 1985, she served in the federal administration of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, where she led the Cherokee government in establishing new health clinics, early and adult education programs, and more. After her political career, she continued advocating for women’s health, tribal sovereignty, and cancer awareness. In 1998, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

🌟 2024 OECP Conference! 🌟 Sunbeam staff attended the Oklahoma Early Childhood Program Annual Summit this week. We connected with other early childhood programs from across the state and brought home new leadership skills to improve our work with children and families. Kathleen Espinoza, our Family Engagement Coordinator, and Sarah England, Senior Director of Grants and Advocacy, also led a Parent Engagement in Action breakout session. 🎤✨ The presentation highlighted innovative strategies to support families and empower parents to step confidently into their roles as leaders within their households and communities. By fostering strong family engagement, we’re not just transforming individual lives; we’re also shaping statewide practices that make a lasting impact on our communities. Why is this important? Because when families are engaged, children thrive! It strengthens their educational journey and builds a foundation for lifelong success. Together, we can ensure that every parent feels equipped and inspired to take the lead in their family’s growth and development. Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to these conversations! And to our partners at @CAP Tulsa for coordinating this opportunity! 💪💙
