A force united by a promise to end breast cancer, funding groundbreaking research, community health & advocacy programs.
About us
In 1980, Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. Two years later, that promise became the Susan G. Komen® organization and the beginning of a global movement. For over 40 years, we've led the way funding groundbreaking research, community health initiatives and advocacy programs in local communities across the U.S. and in more than 30 countries. And with your help, we’ll continue pushing for progress to end breast cancer every day, until it’s a thing of the past. “As much as everybody knows about breast cancer, there's still more people being affected by it. So it's just really good to talk about it as much as possible, make sure people are getting their scans,” said hit musician and Komen Ambassador Andy Grammer in this story from People. Andy’s mother, Kathy, died of metastatic breast cancer when he was 25. “Breast cancer has always been something that's had a huge impact on my life and it's just very personal and very real to me,” he said. "The new federal rule on breast density provides women across the U.S. with vital and more consistent information on their breast density. Women with very dense breasts are 4-5 times more likely to get breast cancer than women with fatty breasts, and some studies show that Black women are more likely to have dense breasts," said Natasha Mmeje, director of community education and outreach for Komen, in this article from EBONY Media. The update requires mammography result summaries to start including a breast density notification statement. This rule may save lives in the Black community, as Black women tend to have denser breast tissue than white women, which may increase their risk of breast cancer and make it more difficult to spot the initial signs on a mammogram. https://lnkd.in/eEbrCgjN
