What an honor to be in a room with so many brilliant collaborators discussing the impact of Pippi Longstocking!
The publication of Pippi's stories was "a revolution in the nursery," teaching young readers that girls and other young people could be brave, bold, and strong. In a world where courageous voices are being silenced every day, we're proud to #BeMorePippi.

Last Friday, in partnership with PEN America we had the privilege of co-hosting a celebration commemorating the 80th anniversary of Pippi Longstocking.
The event included a heartfelt discussion featuring distinguished panelists Jonathan Friedman (Managing Director of U.S. Free Expression and Education at PEN America), Laurie Halse Anderson (author, advocate for the freedom of expression, and 2023 Laureate of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award), Johan Palmberg (great-grandson of Astrid Lindgren and a member of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award Jury, representing The Astrid Lindgren Co.), and Jamia Wilson (American writer, commentator, and feminist activist). The discussion was skillfully moderated by Leonard S. Marcus, a renowned children's book historian and critic.
Our event platformed important conversations around youth literacy, the freedom of expression, and how to combat censorship, but also celebrated the launches of very exciting Pippi events happening throughout the rest of the year: the New York Public Library will organize events and readings of classic Pippi stories at 15 of their branches, the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre of NYC Parks will present a Pippi marionette musical throughout parks in the city from May - October, “ and BonBon - A Swedish Candy Company will have a sweet Pippi surprise later this year. Our Pippi fun is far from over!
A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in making this event both enjoyable and important, and an extra special thank you to Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA), Astrid Lindgren AB, SVEA, and the Swedish Institute for their contributions.
The evening was not only a tribute to the lasting legacy of Pippi Longstocking but also a celebration of courage, creativity, and the power of storytelling. Let’s not forget to “Be More Pippi!”.

Today marks International Women’s Day, celebrated worldwide on March 8th to honor women’s accomplishments and to advocate for gender equality.
This year, International Women’s Day holds special significance for us, as Sweden has the honor of leading the board of UN Women. UN Women is the United Nations’ entity dedicated to promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women globally. Through its work, UN Women addresses the unique challenges faced by women and girls, striving to eliminate discrimination and violence, ensure equal participation in decision-making, and support women’s economic empowerment.
March is Women's History Month, a month celebrated here in the US to honor the progress made while also acknowledging the work that remains. This year, Sweden is chairing the board of UN Women, focusing specifically on economic empowerment. We recognise that women’s economic empowerment builds strong societies and contributes to global prosperity. That’s why we’re committed to advancing gender equality, ensuring that women everywhere have the resources, opportunities, and rights they need to thrive 🌎🙋♀️
