  • Exciting news about University Cooperative School! SSF worked closely with CAST architecture and served as the structural engineer to change the status to 'Retrofitted' on the City’s list of structures requiring evaluation and retrofitting for the upcoming URM Ordinance! We look forward to assisting more building owners and architects in achieving this benchmark!

URM Seismic Retrofit—University Cooperative School is the first school to complete a retrofit and has been officially removed from the City of Seattle’s URM list. The City of Seattle has recognized the University Cooperative School for successfully achieving "Retrofitted Unreinforced Masonry (URM)" status. The project team completed the required work and documentation, ensuring the school meets the necessary standards, and updated its status on the City's list of structures previously requiring evaluation and potential retrofitting under the upcoming URM Ordinance. • SSF teamed with Russell Architecture and Berger Partnership on this detached accessory dwelling unit (DADU), located on a steep slope and surrounded by wetlands on the south end of Mercer Island. This 900 SF DADU features exposed cantilevered glulam roof framing that extends from inside the house over a 550 SF deck for an outdoor living area. A deep concrete foundation system with pin piles is anchored into the hillside to prevent movement during a seismic event. 📸: Dale Lang

  • This week, we would like to highlight the ACE Mentor Program, a cause that means a great deal to our firm. Since 2001, the ACE Mentor Program of Washington has introduced over 4,000 students to architecture, engineering, and construction careers. Thanks to the generosity of local firms and mentors, they’ve awarded more than $1.3 million in scholarships. The ACE program is a meaningful way to give back to our community and help inspire the next generation in AEC. Thank you, ACE, for all the incredible work you do. We encourage anyone who is interested in this inspiring mission to check out this fantastic program! 📸: Beth Morales, PE SSF
