Right now, it’s not uncommon for hundreds of candidates to apply for a single job opening, especially when it’s an entry-level job. And the overqualified candidates are usually the ones who are snagging interviews and offers. In a job market as competitive as today’s, it’s table stakes that candidates need to understand and meet work expectations, like appropriate work communication, social norms, and attire. But new young professionals may need more support getting up to speed. For example, they may not have had in-person internships. Therefore, they may not have had the chance to absorb the norms and expectations of work. Talent leaders and hiring managers: If you're hiring recent college grads, be prepared that you may need to explicitly teach the cultural norms of work, not just functional skills. P.S. This post comes out of September’s Talent Roundtable on current trends in the talent sector. Be part of the discussion next time! The next Talent Roundtable is Wednesday, October 9, 12-1pm Eastern ― and the second Wednesday of every month. Register here: https://lnkd.in/eaXhdYUf P.P.S. Nonprofit leaders ― When thinking about total rewards, organizations will often focus primarily on compensation. And that’s a good place to start. But all the total rewards matter and can make all the difference in attracting and retaining top talent. In the next edition of TalentED Leaders (our newsletter for nonprofit leaders), we’ll explore total rewards ― what total rewards are, how to figure out the right total rewards for your organization, and how to revamp your total rewards. The next edition of TalentED Leaders goes out on Thursday! So sign up for the newsletter now: https://lnkd.in/e7nrgPYu #Nonprofit #Nonprofits #Talent

As organizations tighten their belts, teams are trying to complete the same amount of work with fewer people. This leads to feelings of fatigue and burnout. When organizations do hire, they tend to want an experienced leader or manager because there is little time for coaching and development. This leads organizations to look for new hires externally rather than build internal capacity. Which increases the dissatisfaction within the organization. (How can organizations build internal capacity and retain talent? We’ll discuss this in October’s Talent Roundtable on Wednesday, October 9, 12-1pm Eastern ― and the second Wednesday of every month. We’re thrilled to announce that Jamie McKnight Pipkins is Cincinnati Public Schools’ new Diverse Educators Pathway Fellow! TalentED Advisors is honored to have supported this wonderful match. We sat down with Jamie, and these are the highlights of our conversation: 💡 What excites you most about your new role? I’m excited to leverage all the skills and experiences I’ve acquired in other cities over the past 15 years in order to benefit my hometown of Cincinnati! I’m a product of Cincinnati Public Schools so my new role feels like a homecoming. I’m excited to recruit high-need teachers and diversify teacher and school leader pathways. 💡 What impact do you hope to have at Cincinnati Public Schools? I hope that my work will make it possible for more students to see teachers and leaders who look like them. 💡 What piece of advice would you share with other professionals who are seeking their next role at a mission-driven organization such as CPS? Don’t settle. Think about what you want to get out of your next experience and make that known. If you have the skills an employer needs, they’ll be willing to meet your requirements. And stay positive! The day that I was laid off in my previous role is the same day a recruiter reached out to me about this role. It felt like it was meant to be. 🎉 Congratulations, Jamie! You bring deep expertise in talent and a passion for doing mission-driven work. Our team loved getting to know you, and we know you’ll do great work in Cincinnati!

Layoffs. Hiring freezes. Job openings with hundreds of overqualified applicants. There’s lots of evidence that the job market is slowing. But not in a few key functional areas! Development professionals at every level are in high demand. And there are lots of opportunities for talent professionals too (though not for those who only specialize in recruitment). For anyone not working in development or talent, this is a great time to deepen or diversify your skills. And in organizations, leaders must think strategically about how to retain team members and grow their skills internally. (How can organizations build internal capacity and retain talent? Congrats to Kindle Education Public Charter School on the first day of school! After helping Kindle hire their founding staff last year, we came back this year to help them hire more staff as the school grows. Over the course of 6 months, we helped Kindle hire 8 strong teachers ― 60% of whom are people of color. We also helped them bring in a new Director of Learning. We’re so proud to support this trailblazing school that’s truly kindling a fire in the hearts and minds of students and the entire community! #Education #TalentAcquisition #Recruitment

We’re thrilled to announce that Mia Winther-Tamaki is @AAF's new Program Coordinator! TalentED is proud to have supported this wonderful match. We sat down with Mia, and these are the highlights of our conversation: 💡 What excites you most about your new role? I’m excited to serve AAPI communities! Before now, I’ve never had the opportunity to connect part of my cultural identity to the work that I do. Since I’ll be supporting so many nonprofits (AAF member organizations) in my work, this role also gives me a unique opportunity to learn how nonprofits work. My background is in urban planning, and down the road, I hope to apply this knowledge to help communities reclaim the common goods that will help them thrive. It’s really helpful for me to learn at an organization like AAF where there’s so much good community-centered work being done. 💡 What impact do you hope to have at AAF? I hope to make the nonprofit support that AAF provides more consistent and customized to each nonprofit or small business. I’d love for the learning to be flexible and timely, something an organization can come back to as they need it. 💡 What piece of advice would you share with other job seekers who are seeking their next role at a mission-driven organization like AAF? First, I’d recommend leaning into your identity. It’s so important to try to make an impact wherever you can find community. Also, be open to new paths. Coming out of grad school with a master’s degree in urban planning, I had a strict idea of what I wanted to do. But as my job search continued, I realized that urban planning is all about community-centered work, which can take many different forms. Gradually, I expanded beyond the path I’d envisioned for myself. And I’m so glad! There’s so much learning to do in the communities around us. 🎉 Congratulations, Mia! You bring such passion for AAF’s work and the work you’re doing in your new role. Our team loved getting to know you, and we know you’ll do great things! #CandidatePlacement #Nonprofit #TalentAcquisition #CoordinatorJobs

We’re thrilled to announce that Michael Lipphardt is Global Preparatory Academy's new COO! TalentED Advisors is honored to have supported this incredible match. We sat down with Mike, and these are the highlights of our conversation: 💡 What excites you most about your new role? It’s an exciting opportunity to serve as a strategic partner at a school that’s set to grow and scale. We’ll make the lives of 750 preK-8 students, their families, and our staff easier by improving systems, procedures, and frameworks. I’m really excited to dive in. 💡 What impact do you hope to have at Global Prep Academy (GPA)? I’m laser focused on human resources, information technology, enrollment, finance, and data and systems management. I want to equip our team with the tools to make those systems work in harmony with one another. These are the areas where we have an opportunity to have the greatest impact in serving our staff, students, and families. 💡 What piece of advice would you share with other leaders who are seeking their next role at a mission-driven organization such as GPA? Leverage your existing network and take intentional time to track down every lead and opportunity to see where those conversations might go. Set aside 30 to 60 minutes every day to give that person a call, set up lunch, have coffee or a drink with them. You never know where those conversations might lead. 🎉 Congratulations, Mike! You bring deep expertise in operations and a passion for doing mission-driven work. Our team had such a great experience getting to know you, and we know you’ll do great things as the COO at Global Prep Academy! #ExecutiveSearch #SchoolLeadership #Nonprofit #TalentAcquisition
