On Wednesday, October 9th, nearly 200 passionate individuals gathered at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science for the screening of the award-winning documentary Lights Out Texas by Daniel Sheire of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. This film reveals a sobering truth: artificial light and reflective windows in urban areas contribute to the deaths of over 3 billion birds each year. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who attended the screening. Your involvement is key to creating change! A special thanks to the dedicated employees and elected officials from DFW cities who showed their support, including #Dallas County Commissioner Dr. Elba Garcia, Policy Analyst Davis A. from Mayor Pro Tem Tennell Atkins’s office, and Council Liaison Brenda M. from Council Member Jesse Moreno’s team. Your presence truly makes a difference! The next morning, a few attendees joined TCA and our Lights Out partners for a bird-building collision survey, gaining firsthand insight into the threats migratory birds face in urban areas. The good news? This is preventable! We’re calling on more buildings to join #ReunionTower, #BankofAmerica, and others in #DowntownFortWorth, as well as citizens, in turning off non-essential lights during migration seasons to provide safer skies for birds. Ways to help: Turn off non-essential lights from 11 PM - 6 AM Advocate for bird-friendly glass to protect our feathered friends Spread the word Birds play essential roles both environmentally and economically as pest-control agents, pollinators, carcass cleaners, and more. Together, we can reduce light pollution and advocate for bird-friendly glass to help save billions of migratory birds. By taking action, we can ensure a brighter future for our feathered friends for future generations.
