About us

Through grassroots advocacy, Texas Conservation Alliance protects and preserves wildlife and wild habitats for future generations of Texans. For 50 years, Texas Conservation Alliance has successfully advocated for wildlife and wild places in Texas. TCA has engaged with local communities to protect rivers and forests of East Texas and the prairies of West Texas. Thanks to TCA, more than 200,000 Texas acres are protected in parks and wildlife refuges. We've stopped unnecessary reservoirs that drown Texas rivers, fought clear-cutting in national forests, and recruited thousands of people to conserve Texas' beautiful outdoor world. Texas Conservation Alliance is here to help the citizens of Texas rally local support, gather the facts, and protect against encroachment of wildlife habitats so crucial to the future of our state.

TCA is hiring interns for the fall! 🐦🌱 We are accepting applications for our Lights Outs programs in Dallas, Fort Worth, and College Station. Selected applicants will help lead bird-collision surveys, educate the public on Lights Out principles, and collect data that is important for research and provides a strong foundation for education and advocacy for migratory birds. We are also accepting applications for our Native Plant Restoration program. Selected applicants will gain experience organizing volunteer-based habitat restoration events, such as litter clean-ups, removals of invasive plants, and plantings of native plants. Selected applicants in the Dallas area will also help care for native plants in the Native Plant Propagation Center which are used to restore native prairie habitats throughout North Texas! • History was made for Mountain Lions in Texas last week. The first-ever regulations for Mountain Lions in the Lone Star State were passed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission on May 23rd. The ruling prohibits "canned" hunting and requires that traps and snares be checked every 36-hours. These regulations encourage the ethical treatment of Mountain Lions and are a step in the right direction towards a management plan for this amazing species. Advocates continue their efforts to protect Mountain Lions and push for the implementation of mandatory harvest reports as this data will provide vital information about distribution and populations. TCA's Senior Policy Director, Janice Bezanson, Executive Director, John DeFillipo, and Community Conservation & Communications Coordinator, Anne Beckmann, were proud to stand beside so many individuals fighting to protect this great animal on this monumental day.

  • Check out the amazing work from Abigail, TCA's Lights Out College Station intern! Abigail worked together to coordinate surveys for migratory birds on Texas A&M's campus, raise awareness of the impacts of light pollution, and compile a final report on LOCS. #LightsOutTexas #interns

Recent Graduate of Texas A&M University with a B.S. in Ecology and Conservation Biology - Vertebrate Zoology | Reproductive Biology Research Intern @ Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute

This past semester I had the incredible opportunity to serve as an intern with the Texas Conservation Alliance, under the Lights Out! College Station Initiative. I want to thank all of the people at TCA for deepening my knowledge and understanding of conservation and outreach. I couldn’t have done it without the help and support of my mentors and advisors. During my internship, I co-led on-campus building collision surveys at Texas A&M University as part of the statewide campaign to “darken the night” by collecting and saving birds that had fallen victim to building collisions. Over 1 billion birds die annually from collisions due to artificial lighting practices and building design. I worked with TCA to observe this phenomenon on A&M’s campus in order to gather data and construct the first annual LOCS report, which sought to influence change in local legislation and future building design (https://lnkd.in/gyhWURKA). Because TCA embraces environmental restoration projects, I also had the chance to conduct an independent project during my internship. I was able to head and coordinate a habitat restoration event at Lick Creek Park with over 60 volunteers to pull hundreds of pounds of invasive species and establish 200 native plants, creating a native seed bank for the community.  This project will improve habitat for native wildlife, such as migrating birds and pollinators, and enable future restoration projects to enhance green spaces throughout our community. Overall, this internship proved to be an incredibly valuable experience, expanding my perspective on conservation and allowing me to explore the labor and challenges that go into field research, public outreach, and state-wide initiatives. I want to thank TCA and their team for making my internship something I never imagined I would be able to do as an undergraduate student. I am extremely grateful and will continue my path into wildlife conservation with the skills that I obtained during my time with Lights Out! College Station. #TexasConservationAlliance #tamu #BiodiversityResearchandTeachingCollections #EcologyandConservationBiology #LightsOut! #DarkentheNight #LickCreekPark

This week, our Midlothian, Texas plant had some fun in the mud! The group partnered with the Texas Conservation Alliance to plant milkweeds for the monarch butterflies! Texas plays a critical role in supporting monarchs. When monarchs migrate back to Texas in the spring, they look for milkweed plants and lay eggs on the leaves. The caterpillars only eat milkweed leaves. As such, milkweed is critical for the survival of monarchs. Without it, they cannot complete their life cycle and continue their migration! #Conservation

  • At our annual meeting, Texas Conservation Alliance reflected on the past year and looked ahead to 2024. Thank you to all who attended! TCA is rooted in the #advocacy work of Ned Fritz, “a force of nature and for nature,” said board chairman Justin Lannen. In 2023, TCA welcomed John DeFillipo as executive director, who seeks to fulfill Ned’s vision through #stewardship, partnerships, and advocacy. John has led TCA to a banner year of growing restoration projects and new connections with partners and donors. “TCA has created a wonderful family of conservation throughout the state,” said John. “The state of our conservation is strong.” We also honored those we have lost, including Mack Turner, chairman of the board from 2007-2022. Mack was known to all for his big heart and big contributions to TCA, said Janice Bezanson in a special tribute. Next year and beyond, TCA plans to expand our conservation work to new regions of Texas, connect with young conservationists, and strengthen our 3 pillars of advocacy, community conservation, and outreach. We are so grateful to River Legacy Nature Center in Arlington for hosting and partnering with us. A special thank you goes to our 50 member organizations and all our #volunteers, #interns, board members, and staff. Together, we are taking action to protect wildlife! To join TCA on our conservation journey, visit tcatexas.org to sign up for an event or become a member. #TXCAT #restore #preserve #education #PlantTheSeed #wildlife #HappyNewYear #WeAreTCA National Wildlife Federation
