Our 16th Annual Champions of Education Luncheon yesterday was a huge success! We had a wonderful time celebrating 30 years of Teaching Matters, along with our amazing honorees, Verdun Perry, the Global Head of Strategic Partners at Blackstone and Amanda Ross, the creator of ARossGirl. Verdun accepted the award on behalf of his second-grade teacher, Ms. Betty Brown, whose reading curriculum changed his life. He shared a touching story about visiting her classroom in West Philly, where students were surprised to learn he grew up in their neighborhood. His message to them was simple but powerful: "If I can get out of here, so can you." That moment, which moved everyone to tears, is what drives his passion for creating opportunities for kids to succeed. Amanda also shared how one breakfast event motivated her to begin volunteering in the Bronx, which changed her life and made her the passionate philanthropist that she is today. We are also grateful to our keynote speaker, Shawn Morehead, whose support as The New York Community Trust's vice president allowed us to spearhead the campaign for better literacy in our schools through the NYC Reads initiative. Thank you to everyone who donated and attended! We are extremely close to meeting our fundraising goal of $500,000, so join us in our mission to support teachers and students across the city by donating today: https://lnkd.in/epPKviD8

Our associate director of programs, Nicole Dominique, was featured in an Education Week article about NYC's new literacy programs in public schools. The article discusses New York City's switch to a centralized system that required schools to pick from one of three reading curricula. Nicole speaks about the most popular choice, Into Reading: “We can compare Into Reading to a buffet. They give teachers a lot of options, because they want to make sure that the needs of the classroom can be met no matter what.” Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gRi7_HHe
