Hello, new industrial revolution. Pittsburgh is well on its way to transforming from a former steel town to an AI hub, and a global center for robotics and advanced manufacturing. That was the message at the AI Horizons Pittsburgh Summit in Bakery Square this week. “There’s some people who still think it’s a lot of hype,” Michael Keslar, divisional CIO and president of BNY MELLON FOUNDATION OF SOUTHWESTERN PENNSYLVANIA, told Technical.ly. “We’re not in that camp.” Here’s how it all went down: https://lnkd.in/enen-gVM

How does Vanguard welcome new hires? Natalie McManus, PHR, SHRM-CP, senior manager of workforce strategy and enablement, says "From their first day at Vanguard, new crew are immersed in our culture. They are oriented to our mission and purpose and our client-first mindset; they are invited to join one of our crew resource groups as an ally or member of each community; and they can volunteer or donate to a charity of their choice or our signature Strong Start for Kids Program, which enables high quality early childhood education. They also have numerous opportunities to invest in their personal development, including our annual enterprise-wide technology conference. In our IT division, we integrate new application engineers through a robust, year-long technical onboarding program. The program’s goal is to accelerate productivity for our new application engineers and enable them to do their best work from day one. It also helps them build a solid foundation of Vanguard's technologies, ways of working, and culture. By engaging new crew in Vanguard’s culture from the start, we set them up to thrive and contribute effectively to our mission: To take a stand for all investors, to treat them fairly, and to give them the best chance for investment success." Former Morning Consult exec Tyler Sinclair is back with a new analytics startup. Called Olympus Intel, the platform compiles data from government and other sources to help founders get market size insights. “I’m a perfectionist and a data person, and I was spending 12, 13 hours on one of these examples or exercises for a client, and I was not even getting it to my definition of good,” Sinclair told Technical.ly. Here’s how the new platform works: https://lnkd.in/eyXHwvVZ

Student entrepreneurs in Baltimore have a new potential funding source: The Pava LaPere Innovative Acceleration Grant Program is offering $500,000 to support turning startup ideas into viable businesses. “We want to find young startups that are committed to building this,” said Josh Ambrose, director of the Johns Hopkins Pava Center. “And we want to do everything we can to celebrate their success here in Maryland, and especially in Baltimore.” This isn’t an accelerator program or a pitch competition, he clarified — instead, student ventures from across universities and community colleges can submit applications for a chance to participate in a showcase this February. There’s a cool new underwater art exhibit you don’t want to miss if you’re in DC. Called “Twilight Zone: Hidden wonders of the Ocean,” it features stunning 270-degree projections on towering 28-foot walls, immersing visitors in the depths of the sea. It’s open through mid-November at ARTECHOUSE, a gallery that does a lot of blending of art and science. Artechouse manager Brittany Riddick said even though she watches the projection daily, each visitor brings a fresh perspective. “Whatever they’re pointing out that’s important to them is going to be totally different outside of my frame of reference.” Get the scoop on the tech behind the exhibit and check out the cool photos: https://lnkd.in/gq4-iHX9
