At a recent gathering of Technical.ly’s 2024 RealLIST Connectors at Accenture’s new downtown office, tech leaders emphasized the power of location in shaping connections and driving the tech ecosystem forward. While efforts are underway to revitalize downtown, the innovation community mostly thrives in the neighborhoods, they said. “A thriving startup community in Pittsburgh exists among many neighborhoods — and should remain that way,” said Jenny Sharpe, director of workforce development for the Pittsburgh Robotics Network. https://lnkd.in/e4WN8j44 #RealLIST

Gary Shapiro, CEO of the Consumer Technology Association, just released a new book called “Pivot or Die." Shapiro’s fourth title, it snapshots case studies and lived experiences about different entities that’ve been forced to pivot for survival. Many examples are from the pandemic, like when CES went virtual in 2021. “Pivoting isn’t just about strategic business decisions,” Shapiro told Technical.ly, “but also about mustering honesty and strength to acknowledge when something isn’t working.” https://lnkd.in/e-UKerpM

A new study in the Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology has revealed that the air quality in the City Hall subway station in downtown Philadelphia is significantly worse than the air just above it. They specifically found that black carbon levels underground are about 10 times higher than the sidewalks around 15th street. “Our findings suggest that the black carbon is being generated by the subway system itself," the researchers noted, with brake pads being one potential source. Officials from the U.S. Economic Development Administration were in Philly this week to suss out how the PROPEL Tech Hub has advanced since it was snubbed for this summer. Program director Eric Smith of the EDA told Technical.ly in an exclusive interview he thinks the Philadelphia consortium is on the right path to score future grant awards. Still, more progress is needed, he said — especially on the region’s plan for how new technologies will get to market. “Not everybody can win, and we actually want to design it that way,” Smith said. “We actually want folks to strive really hard for that funding and bring people together.” https://lnkd.in/ez6qJj6H

Open-source software has fueled innovation for years, but the people who maintain the software often face burnout as demand for their software increases without adequate compensation. The Open Source Pledge is directly tackling the issue head-on, with 20 companies pledging nearly $1.3 million to support these maintainers, committing $2,000 per developer annually. Led by Chad Whitacre from Sentry, this initiative not only encourages companies to fairly compensate these developers, but also holds them accountable through annual reports. “In a grocery store, I pay for the food first and then I take it home and eat it. In a restaurant, I eat the food first, and then the question is, am I going to pay for it?” Whitacre wants to use this pledge to shift the status quo in open source, ensuring fair compensation. Read on to see how this Whitacre is planning to change the open-source ecosystem: https://lnkd.in/eZtiQJaB

In the late 2000s, tech enthusiasts and journalists recognized that startup culture was expanding beyond Silicon Valley, leading to a boom in local tech blogs and news sites like Technical.ly. The art of storytelling has since become a crucial component in building innovation ecosystems. Despite this, many local tech media outlets have struggled to survive in our new digital landscape. Last month, Baltimore’s Fells Point was buzzing with energy as EcoMap Technologies, Inc. hosted the inaugural SuperConnect conference at Brown Advisory. Embodying the spirit of the late Pave LaPree, EcoMap’s founder, the event brought together ecosystem builders, funders, and entrepreneurial support organizations. Speakers emphasized the need for diversity across all areas — race, culture, life experience, and more — as a key factor in creating stronger, more inclusive economies. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and leaders like Delali Dzirasa and Jeff Cherry spoke to the critical role of early-stage support for startups and the vast opportunities within underserved communities. The message was clear: By empowering underrepresented entrepreneurs, we’re not only fueling economic growth but also building a more socially conscious future.
