If you are on the job hunt in tech currently, here's what we'd do: 👉 Narrow down what type of company you want to work for, get really specific and focus on those companies. Connect with people at the company, monitor their careers page, etc. 👉 Be ready to make adjustments and tailor your resume to each job you do apply for, do not use the same general one for each job. Yes, it's kind of annoying but this has proven to help your application standout. 👉 Don't be afraid of career tools or AI tools that can assist in your job hunting efforts. Do not mass apply to roles with AI, but use relevant tools to help you optimize your resume, cover letter, interviews, and more. 👉 Join relevant communities in your job field and the tech industry. Hint: Tech Workers Club is a great place to start. But there are many good ones out there that have new job opportunities listed before they go public and a great way to chat with someone directly. 👉 Be patient. It's been a unpredictable and weak tech job market, opportunities may take longer than you anticipate. One thing we started doing for Tech Workers Club community members recently... Roasts 🔥 This could be LinkedIn profiles, resumes, cover letters, etc. Don't worry, we aren't mean about it. Instead it's a way to provide quick thoughts and feedback to help others improve or have a better chance of landing a new opportunity in tech. We just launched a LinkedIn Roast this week and already had tons of people drop their profile links. Let's talk about job hopping ⏭ Pro: we've heard engineers who were making $50 per hour in 2020 and now making $90 per hour. Doubtful that happens unless they moved around a bit. Con: you don't build up any "equity" with your current business making it harder to land internal promotions / senior positions. Traditionally, recruiters loved seeing 4 years here, 5 years there. That's swinging in the other direction but not as far as Gen Z thinks. Junior or mid level people at tech companies should aim for 2-3 years in a role assuming the role is good for them. Maybe even have some equity with a one year cliff. Quick poll:
