Our Founder, Head, and Deputy Head for Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum at the 92nd Street Y Recanati-Kaplan Talks! Isabelle Bonneau, Kathleen Visconti, and Sarah Scanzoni attended a thought-provoking educational talk featuring Jonathan Haidt, author of The Anxious Generation, and Dr. Becky Kennedy, CEO of Good Inside and parenting expert, hosted by Stephanie Ruhle. The discussion focused on the mental health crisis, particularly the epidemic of anxiety in children — a topic deeply connected to one of the three central pillars of our school's mission: Happiness. Haidt, Kennedy, and Ruhle explored strategies for providing "sturdy leadership" for children and establishing boundaries, addressing the unique challenges posed by a technology-driven society. They emphasized the importance of allowing children to take risks, supporting them as they navigate challenging emotions, and helping them develop a sense of competence. "Happiness cannot be reached by eliminating all ‘triggers’ from life; rather, happiness comes from learning to deprive external events of the power to trigger negative emotions in you." At Tessa, through our play- and inquiry-based learning within the IB PYP framework, alongside a strong emphasis on Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), we create a supportive environment that nurtures students’ self-efficacy. We also work closely with parents to collaboratively promote the social, emotional, and intellectual development of our children. These practices are central to our mission, ensuring that our students grow up with the attributes and values they need to thrive in an increasingly complex world. Thank you again for the valuable insights shared during this event, helping us strengthen our collaborative efforts with both students and parents!

At Tessa, we love sharing the beauty and excitement of different cultures and languages with our learners. Highlighting last week's Celtic culture celebration, we were thrilled to host the band Startijenn, which came straight from Brittany, France. They showcased a variety of Celtic and Breton music, dances, language, and history.
