Unpopular opinion: I loved the SAT. When I was in foster care and homeless, standardized tests were my chance to show universities I was academically qualified. They allowed me to look forward, even as every other part of college applications focused on the past. Over the last few weeks, as top colleges have announced they’re reinstating ACT/SAT requirements, I’ve talked to so many non-traditional, immigrant, and disadvantaged students about the unspeakable: our affection for these exams. In my latest for the The New York Times: “I will always feel tenderness toward the Scantron sheets that unlocked higher education and a better life.” What’s surprised you most about the move away from test-optional policies? Do you think more schools will follow suit?
In 2020, ERB and Test Innovators partnered with the goal of leveling the playing field for all ISEE test takers. The partnership provides every student with access to high-quality test practice. In order to assess the impact of the partnership, a data study was conducted. The study found that practicing for the ISEE positively impacts students’ experience on test day, particularly students who receive a fee waiver. When it comes to test prep, families may have questions such as: ✏️ Does my child’s ISEE score matter in your admission process? ✏️ Should we hire a tutor for ISEE? ✏️ Is test prep three times a week for six weeks too much? Data show that even just 2.5 hours total of test practice can actually level the playing field so that all students put their best foot forward on test day. From a determination to provide a fair and equitable approach to test prep, ERB’s partnership with Test Innovators was born in 2020.
