Local Law 88 (LL88) mandates that buildings over 25,000 square feet upgrade their lighting systems to meet current energy efficiency standards and install electrical sub-meters in tenant spaces larger than 5,000 square feet. The compliance deadline for these requirements is December 31, 2024. Although the Department of Buildings (DOB) has yet to publish a means of reporting, inspections conducted by a licenses engineer should be scheduled as soon as possible to ensure meeting the deadline for filing. Mayor Adams has announced that starting in November, all NYC buildings with one to nine units will be required to put their trash into a bin of 55 gallons or less and to purchase the city’s official new trash bin by the year 2026. The City writes that “the new directive will containerize 70% of the city’s trash, officials said, and deter rats from dining on discarded food,” as well as prevent a majority of on-the-job injuries for sanitation workers since the official bins are designed to be picked up by sanitation trucks retrofitted with mechanical tippers instead of relying on manual labor. The bins, which are already available for purchase, are being sold at reduced prices to encourage building owners to act now and not wait until the 2026 deadline.
