Children’s Institute leverages research, practice, policy, and advocacy to shift systems toward justice for families.
About us
We’re building a socially just and equitable future for kids. Children’s Institute has always worked passionately to improve outcomes for Oregon’s kids. Since our founding in 2003, we’ve come to know that a brighter future for our state rests on a foundation of love and care for every child and family. Love sometimes requires a reckoning. We have to grapple with a difficult truth: many policies and practices designed to address economic inequity do not meet the needs of children of color and children living in rural communities. We’re committed to shifting these systems toward justice. And we invite you to join us.

Still so psyched by our event last Friday and the incredible group of community leaders, elected officials, business leaders and advocates that gathered to “choose children” and the work we do to make this state the BEST place to be a kid. I’m super grateful for our sponsors, our talented young leaders/emcees from Vos Elementary ( and our very own Destiny Magaña-Pablo ) and the incredibly talented Children's Institute team that carry out this work each and every day. Cheers to our collective children and cheers to all of you who contributed last Friday to changing the world by giving them - especially our youngest- the love, care and support they need.

During Native American Heritage Month, Children’s Institute celebrates the heritage, resilience, and sovereignty of Indigenous nations across Oregon and the United States. The US has 574 federally recognized tribes, meaning tribes have a government-to-government relationship with the US. Oregon has nine federally recognized tribes today. Historically, more than 60 tribes lived in the state with at least 18 languages. Today, approximately 175 indigenous languages are still spoken across the US. While we work to build our partnerships with Native American communities, we deeply honor the Indigenous organizations in Oregon that champion equity and create opportunities for Native children and their families. This month, we are committed to listening, learning, and amplifying Native voices in early childhood education, as we work toward a future where every child is supported and celebrated. Featured voices: Dr. Dolores Subia BigFoot on honor, Suzie Kuerschner on the Collaborative Circle of Care, Luther Standing Bear on love, and Joy Harjo-Sapulpa on story and harmony. A week ago I had the pleasure of talking to leadership of Salt & Straw about one of my favorite topics- LOVE. It turns out love is not only pivotal for children, but for businesses and their teams too. The ones that center it, thrive. It changes all of us at the cellular level. Thank you, Kim Malek for the opportunity and for your support for Children's Institute!

Voting is one of the most powerful ways that we can support children and families in our communities. By voting in the election on November 5, you can help shape the future for young children in Oregon. Let's work together to vote for people and policies that reflect the needs and strengths of all Oregon families. #vote #election2024

We are so grateful to all of our champions for children! At today's annual luncheon, we explored how Children's Institute is transforming systems to ensure all children have what they need to thrive, honored Duncan Campbell with the 2024 Alexander award, and heard from speakers on the importance of supporting young children in our communities. We also introduced a petition, calling for urgent action to strengthen early learning and care in Oregon. Thank you to our sponsors, table hosts, former and current elected officials, and all of our guests who know that together, when we choose children we can change the world. Our Early School Success Fall Cross-Network convening was a day of learning, collaboration, and growth! 🎉 Teams deepened their understanding of child development to support changes across grade levels, explored how to use data for improvement, and reflected on team health to build strong, healthy learning teams. It was a fun, creative, and informative day focused on making a real impact for our students. Talisa Timms, our Continuous Improvement Specialist, shares her reflections from the day—watch the video to find out more!

In 2021, Oregon joined 10 other states in recognizing the second Monday of October as Indigenous People’s Day. Today, we celebrate and honor the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Native American communities in Oregon and across the country. And, we fully support efforts to make Indigenous People’s Day a federal holiday. Here’s one resource: https://lnkd.in/g-UPgRUC Many communities across Oregon offer celebrations and events in October and on the holiday itself. We encourage you to find an event near you, or let us know about an opportunity in your community in the comments!

The Latino presence in America spans centuries, with the Hispanic population in the U.S. now exceeding 60 million people. Today, 23% of all center-based child care workers and 16% of home-based child care providers are Latina, reflecting the vital role the communities play in nurturing and educating future generations. This Hispanic Heritage Month, we honor, celebrate, and reflect on the stories and traditions that shape our world, recognizing the importance of cultural identity and community connection. ⭐️ Join us in exploring these resources as we uplift Hispanic and Latinx experiences this month and beyond! ⭐️
