At the 2024 ESMO - European Society for Medical Oncology Congress, a number of fascinating studies were presented, including new insights on the connection between medication adherence and outcomes in breast cancer treatment. One study I want to highlight, which the #mmas played a major part in, of 500 breast cancer patients showed that adherence to oral anticancer medications varies significantly depending on whether patients had metastatic or nonmetastatic cancer. Patients with metastatic cancer showed higher adherence, while those with nonmetastatic cancer had a much lower rate of adherence—only 28.3% based on the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale. The study also found that severe side effects—like pain, fatigue, and hot flashes—were closely linked to lower adherence. Interestingly, shorter treatment durations were associated with better adherence. The researchers at the National Cancer Institute -Cairo University and Helwan University Cairo developed an adherence program. For 6 months, pharmacy follow up visits were scheduled for patient education, toxicity monitoring and supportive care management. We see the urgency to provide more support and education for patients, especially those managing difficult side effects, in order to improve adherence. El-Shewy R, Ebid A-HIM, Mobarez MA, et al. On Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, I post in order to remind everyone of the ongoing challenges patients face in managing their treatment. In my ongoing efforts to promote adherence, I am so excited to share with you a cutting-edge clinical trial that leverages machine learning and decision support systems to improve medication adherence for those battling metastatic breast cancer. I’ve been working with researchers at the University of Milan on this project for a while. 📢Leveraging Machine Learning to Enhance Medication Adherence for Metastatic Breast Cancer Patients I’m excited to share this RCT that’s pushing the boundaries of healthcare innovation. This study explores a machine learning model designed to predict patient adherence behavior and integrates a decision support system (DSS) to improve outcomes for patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC). 🎯 Primary Goal: The trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a web-based DSS and machine learning application in promoting adherence to oral anticancer therapies (OATs) over 3 months. The adherence will be tracked by the number of pills taken versus the number prescribed. Most importantly, adherence behavior will be measured using the well-established 8-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (#MMAS-8) and the Adherence Attitude Inventory (AAI). By combining predictive analytics and personalized decision support, this trial could reshape how we approach treatment adherence, empowering patients to stay on track with their therapies and ultimately improving outcomes. Stay tuned as we continue to explore how data-driven solutions can transform care for patients with metastatic breast cancer. Abstract in comments section. This will surely lead to new opportunities. #HealthcareInnovation #MachineLearning #ClinicalTrials #BreastCancer #MedicationAdherence #DSS #PatientOutcomes #MMAS #OAT

Epilepsy remains a significant global health burden, affecting 1% of the world’s population – with the highest rates in sub-Saharan Africa. To address this challenge, Jane von Gaudecker, PhD, RN, and associate professor at the IU School of Nursing, is leading a groundbreaking study, “Bridging the Treatment Gap by Expanding Access to Care for People with Epilepsy in Kenya” (BEACON), thanks to a $2.4 million grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and the Fogarty International Center at NIH. “Epilepsy is a condition steeped in myths and misconceptions,” von Gaudecker explained. “Some people believe it’s contagious, or caused by witchcraft, which makes it difficult for patients to seek treatment. Through this initial intervention study aimed at addressing the epilepsy treatment gap in western Kenya, we will begin by training healthcare professionals. Our aim is to shift these attitudes and enhance the quality of care for people with epilepsy.” Learn more: https://ow.ly/lb8a50TAAT0

“Only what gets measured gets managed.” – Peter Drucker’s timeless insight is relevant more than ever in healthcare today, especially as we look at the evolving importance of medication adherence. With the new Medicare Star Ratings, medication adherence is more critical than ever, with a heightened focus on managing patient outcomes. The shift in weightings highlights not only the need but the opportunity for a proactive approach. It’s time to change the thought process. Measuring adherence through tools like the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (#MMAS) isn’t just a checkbox—it’s about identifying barriers and creating tailored, self-management solutions for patients. By measuring adherence, we uncover underlying behaviors and provide personalized strategies to improve patient outcomes. This isn’t just about compliance; it’s about empowering patients to take control of their health. The MMAS helps surface concerns—whether it’s forgetfulness, side effects, or treatment complexity—and allows healthcare providers to intervene with precision. In this new landscape, it’s clear: managing what we measure drives meaningful change in healthcare. Let’s leverage these tools to build healthier communities and stronger patient-provider partnerships. #MedicationAdherence #StarRatings #PatientOutcomes #ProactiveCare
