What's the most important lesson for any leader? Shifting their focus from their own accomplishments to their team’s performance—especially if they have been an outstanding individual contributor. Effective leaders have to direct the work, not do all the work. To do this, people-leaders should be encouraged to build relationships with their direct reports. By getting to know colleagues, leaders can play to team strengths and shore up individual weaknesses. Small everyday actions and interactions can demonstrate that a leader is trustworthy and inclusive. Likewise, small acts of exclusion or favoritism can undermine trust and have lasting negative consequences. In #TheInclusiveLeadershipHandbook, James Sills, president and CEO of M&F Bank NC, the second-oldest African American financial institution in the United States, elaborates on the critical importance of building relationships with your team. Get your copy through the link in the comments to learn more.

As the election approaches, you may find political or partisan discussions becoming increasingly common in the workplace. If you don’t have the energy or inclination to engage, it’s always acceptable to say, “I’d prefer not to have this conversation at work.” And if you decide to have that tough conversation, it’s important to know how to navigate these moments in a way that feels safe and comfortable. Our article linked in the comments provides tips for both scenarios. Plus, we'll be discussing the topic further in our webinar next Tuesday, Keeping Employees Engaged During a Historic (and Volatile) Election Year. Organizations with highly engaged employees are 23% more profitable and report 14% higher productivity than those with low morale. Yet, #EmployeeEngagement rates remain alarmingly low. To increase employee engagement, leaders need to adopt a holistic approach to employee #WellBeing and empower individuals to be their authentic selves. In Amber Keister, CDE®'s latest article, she explores specific positive outcomes high levels of engagement can have on your organization including reduced absenteeism and increased innovation, customer satisfaction, retention, and more. The U.S. Presidential Election countdown is on. As political conversations increase in the workplace, are you prepared to lead your team through this volatile and historic time? While it’s tempting to avoid any talk of politics at work, election seasons can stir strong emotions and heighten tensions, particularly when significant outcomes are on the line. These feelings can sometimes carry over into the workplace, creating conflicts and fostering an "us vs. them" mindset, which can disrupt collaboration and teamwork. You need an election preparedness plan for your teams to ensure that you can provide the support and guidance required, minimize disruptions, and get back to business faster.
