The North Carolina Supreme Court has issued an administrative order (Katrina order) that permits attorneys licensed in other states, including Florida, to temporarily register with the North Carolina State Bar to provide pro bono legal services to those impacted by the storm. The order amends the existing rule to facilitate immediate legal assistance for low-income residents facing the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Named in honor of Florida’s first Black woman lawyer, the Bernice Gaines Dorn Black Women Lawyers Association held “an informative session for potential charter members” at Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad School of Law, Florida Bar Board Member Hilary Creary’s alma mater, on August 29. “We had attorneys and judges who answered the call and turned up to support us,” Creary said. “We will hold our official launch and installation in March of 2025.” Congratulations to the Broward County lawyers and Board Member Hilary Creary on the great work creating this new voluntary bar!

On Monday, state courts in six counties are closed. Assessments of damage continue for courthouses affected by Hurricane Helene.
