Here are a few of the things we do: install a board vertically in the middle of each long side (this keeps the long boards in the same plane), add a cross brace horizontally across the middle of the bed (this prevents the long sides from bowing out due to the weight of the soil), use 4x4 posts in the corners (the corners always rot first, so we use a big piece of wood here to keep the corners together as long as possible). He eventually expanded his field to a farmden (more than a garden, less than a farm) and left academia to lecture, consult, and and write. He has authored nine books and was a syndicated columnist for Associated Press. Besides providing a year ‘round supply of fruits and vegetables, his farmden provides a testing ground for innovative techniques in soil care, pruning, and growing fruits and vegetables, and provides an educational site for workshops and training.
