Farmers do so much more than grow and harvest food. They are engrained in their communities – feeding families at their markets, in our grocery stores, and through charitable food programs. Without farmers, we couldn’t do what we do. In this video, in celebration of #NationalFarmersDay, our team members give back by picking surplus corn at Oak Grove Farms, a local farm and market just miles from our Support Office in Central Pennsylvania. Then Project SHARE makes sure this gleaned produce gets into the hands of local families who need it most. To honor our friends in agriculture on National Farmers Day, we’re donating $1,000 to 15 nonprofit, agriculture organizations to help cultivate and grow their missions and programs. Additionally, The GIANT Company team members lent a hand to hardworking farmers at volunteer events throughout the week. As we settle into #HispanicHeritageMonth, join The GIANT Company as we celebrate and honor Hispanic culture and contributions to the food retail industry and communities. Store manager of our Nazareth, Pa. GIANT, Joe Cruz, has been a GIANT team member for 29 years and in the industry for 38. He is a passionate leader whose style is to coach, teach, and inspire. Joe serves on our EMPOWER business resource group which provides BIPOC team members with opportunities to network, lead, and share experiences in a safe and empowering space. He also serves on the company’s Inclusion Council, which meets with leadership to share insights and exchange ideas to promote diversity and inclusion. Hispanic Heritage Month means a lot to him. It’s a reminder to celebrate “what makes us, us.” Joe’s parents are from Puerto Rico, and he was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, where he experienced and appreciated so many different cultures, histories, and foods – and that continues today. He loves learning about other cultures and sharing about his Puerto Rican heritage, and these meaningful conversations with other GIANT team members help fuel his love for the job and the people. “I see the people I interact with at GIANT as my extended family…I love sharing details about who I am as a person and culturally – what we do and how we eat,” Joe shares. “It gives me an opportunity to have good conversations, not only to share my heritage, but to learn a little bit about somebody else’s heritage.”

All of our team members make customer happiness a priority, but did you know we have positions that focus on ensuring our customers consistently have the best experience in our stores? Shayla Cantor, assistant store manager of customer experience at our Lititz Pike, Lancaster GIANT, does just that! We're sharing a bit about her for today's Meet a Team Member Monday. Shayla has been with The GIANT Company for 16 years, starting as a part-time bakery team member when she was in high school, and she’s been with us ever since. Through her various roles throughout the store, one thing has remained constant: customers have always been at the core of her efforts. What does her role entail? Shayla spends her time determining how to best take care of customers to provide them the best in-store and GIANT Direct shopping experiences. Her favorite part of the job is working with her team to make lasting improvements to instill a caring culture. “I encourage a customer-centered attitude throughout the store, which creates that culture of kindness we are working to maintain and drive forward,” she shares. “It's important to make sure our customers feel heard and seen, and I make sure everyone goes above and beyond to provide the best customer service possible. Every customer is an individual and deserves to be treated like they are a VIP.” Shayla’s favorite accomplishment is when she was transferred to a new store as a new-to-role manager and took on the challenge of improving her store’s customer satisfaction score – and, with her team by her side, ended up nearly doubling it! “We created an inviting, customer-oriented culture in our store, and I am a huge believer that overall morale creates customer happiness because when your team is in a good place, so are your customers,” Shayla shares. “With total store teamwork, communication, and drive, we were able to get our customer satisfaction score to progress. We made a point to go above and beyond to take care of our customers.” Thank you, Shayla, for all you do to put our customers first!

Today we held our 2024 GIANT Grocery Grab competition as part of our #HungerActionMonth and year-round efforts to eliminate hunger – and our contestants gave it their all to support the food bank of their choice! Contestants from the Trexlertown, PA community and GIANT store competed to raise awareness and funds for local hunger relief organizations. After a riveting round of hunger-related trivia, they shopped ‘til they dropped. In the end, the winners were PA State Rep. Ryan Mackenzie and Katie Browning, lead checkout coach of the Trexlertown GIANT. Congratulations on earning that Golden Shopping Cart! The GIANT Company was honored to surprise each of the chosen hunger relief organizations with $15,000 to support their work to combat hunger in their communities. Thank you to all of our participants for making the 4th annual GIANT Grocery Grab so special, and to our community relations and charitable giving team for organizing such an engaging and impactful event.
