📢 #CEDAW Update! During the CEDAW review for #Kuwait in May 2024, the CEDAW Committee issued powerful recommendations on upholding gender equality in Kuwaiti nationality laws and addressing statelessness among the Bidoon community. We urge the Government of Kuwait to uphold women’s right to confer citizenship on an equal basis with men and the rights of stateless individuals in Kuwait. Bina Ramanand from Family Frontiers urged the Malaysian Government to amend laws to ensure gender equality in citizenship rights, retroactively at the #CEDAW Review of Malaysia in May 2024. Bina also highlighted the need to halt proposed citizenship amendments that could be regressive and exacerbate statelessness. Watch her powerful oral intervention and join us in advocating for equal nationality rights and an end to statelessness in Malaysia. #CEDAW2024 #EqualNationalityRights #GenderEquality Nationality for All | Family Frontiers

Malaysia was up for its CEDAW review last month. The CEDAW Committee has provided Malaysia with powerful and comprehensive recommendations to uphold gender equality in nationality laws and address statelessness. These key recommendations include: 1. Amending the Federal Constitution to grant women equal nationality rights as men. 2. Withdrawing constitutional amendments that could exacerbate statelessness. 3. Fulfilling the Government’s pledge to resolve pending 14,000 citizenship applications. 4. Acceding to the two convention on statelessness. These recommendations are a crucial step towards promoting gender equality and reducing statelessness in Malaysia. We urge the Government to take swift action to implement the recommendations. You can find the full concluding observations here: https://lnkd.in/gY-NehvX #CEDAW2024 #GenderEquality #EndStatelessness #Malaysia #HumanRights #EqualNationalityRights Nationality for All | Family Frontiers

PhD Candidate @ Aristotle University of Thessaloniki - Independent Consultant @ Institute on Statelessness and Inclusion
“Gender discrimination in nationality laws undermines women’s equal citizenship and sustainable development. In twenty-four countries women are denied the right to pass their nationality to their own child on an equal basis with men. In over forty countries women are denied the equal right to pass their nationality to a noncitizen spouse. Those impacted by gender discrimination in nationality laws often face obstacles in accessing education, healthcare, employment, property rights, inheritance, and freedom of movement. They may even be rendered stateless. These discriminatory nationality laws are holding countries back and contributing to poverty.” Check out the below video by The Global Campaign for Equal Nationality Rights and join the effort to end gender discrimination in nationality laws once and for all! https://lnkd.in/dFTfb8Fh
