Better, Brighter Futures for Kids
About us
The Home for Little Wanderers helps build stable lives and hopeful futures for children and their families. Through a wide range of innovative community-based and residential programs, we ensure the emotional, social, educational and physical well-being of more than 15,000 children and families each year. Many of these children have experienced abuse, neglect, trauma or a disrupted family life. As the oldest child welfare agency in America, we provide them with safe surroundings, permanent, loving relationships and a secure path toward a better, brighter future. Because every child deserves happiness, and no child should go through life alone.

When school is out for summer, parents who live on the brink of poverty must often push themselves to their financial limits to provide for their children. The heartbreaking reality is, when they come up short, parents can be mistaken as neglectful, when they are simply struggling to stay afloat. So how do we help break cycles of instability for these families? President and CEO of The Home Lesli Suggs, LICSW, shares how summertime introduces a slew of stressful challenges for parents who struggle to afford basic needs and explores how we can all help lighten their load when assistance programs cannot. https://lnkd.in/dC2Ftnaf

The Home's Southeast Campus team had beautiful blue skies and sunshine for their recent BBQ and field day, which was sponsored and organized by longtime volunteer of The Home Stacy Cappella. Program Director Kevin Paul Edwards fired up the grill and cooked a delicious spread for all, while those who craved a sweet treat lined up at the ice cream truck. If only these summer days could last forever!

Last night, the MLB's best put on a show for the 94th All-Star Game. Young baseball fans at The Home's Southeast Campus watched attentively and cheered on their favorite players, including the Boston Red Sox's Tanner Houck, who generously provided pizza for our entire watch party! In 2023, Tanner teamed up with The Home to raise awareness about the importance of adoption and spread joy to children across our agency. Since, he has hosted youth at Fenway Park and visited programs across the agency to make priceless memories for our youth. Congratulations, Tanner, on your first all-star appearance, from all of us here at The Home!

Staff at The Home's Camp Wediko welcomed their 2024 campers on July 6, led by Camp Director Gavin Meade, M.A., who is embarking on his sixth summer at camp this year! Gavin came in the summer of 2018 as a direct care staff and he was quickly hooked. He returned as a lead staff in 2019, Program Coordinator in 2020, Program Manager in 2022, and he has now taken over the directorship. Camp Wediko’s overarching “ubuntu” philosophy, which means “I am because we are,” resonates with Gavin, as does its strong sense of community. “There isn’t a single person who wouldn’t drop what they’re doing to come help you if you needed it,” he says. We are wishing Gavin and his crew an incredible summer session! #summercamp #staffspotlight #summerprogramming

At the end of June, The Home closed out Pride Month with a festive yard party at Waltham House, one of our residential group homes for LGBTQ+ youth. This annual gathering is one we always look forward to, when staff and youth partake in summer games, crafts, food and more to celebrate Pride and diversity across The Home and our community. We want to thank this year's sponsor Cambridge Savings Bank for funding such a fun afternoon for our youth, and give a special shout-out to Rockland Trust for this year's goodie bags that were enjoyed by all!

On July 8, The Home expanded its portfolio of services and programs with the official reopening of Youth on Fire, a drop-in center that serves unhoused and street-involved youth. Formerly under the management of Fenway Health, the center has reopened under the same name and at the same location, 1 Church Street in Cambridge. The Home is eager to build upon the program's long and reliable history of serving young adults, by providing hot meals, housing, clothing, showers, and laundry facilities, as well as health screenings, medical care, mental health counseling, enrollment in health insurance, and referrals to other self-identified needs. https://lnkd.in/e8fuwZsa
