The U.S. Surgeon General has issued a parental mental health & well-being advisory: "Parents Under Pressure". You can download it here: ➡ https://lnkd.in/g5KqiDkM In the advisory, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy says that parents' well-being is linked to the well-being of their kids. The report also says that one of the critical worries that parents have is related to their children's mental health. We believe that #mentalhealthliteracy (MHL) education should be a part of the solution. MHL is the part of health literacy that many of us didn't learn. When trusted adults including parents and caregivers have MHL, they have the knowledge and confidence they need to support the youth in their lives and help them to develop their own MHL too. 🏀 🏐 🏈 ⛸ 🏑 🤸♂️ 🏃♀️ 🏊♀️ ⚽ ⚾ 🎾 🤼 🏑 🏊♀️ ⚽ ⚾ 🎾 🏀 🏐 ⛸ 🏈 🤸♂️ 🏃♀️ 📣 📣 📣 Athletes, coaches, administrators, have you seen this article? 📣 📣 📣 Thanks to SIRC - The Sport Information Resource Centre - and authors Gabrielle Cadotte, Sophie Brassard, and Veronica Allan for this excellent piece: "Why is it difficult for high performance athletes to ask for help?" 🤸♂️ “High performance athletes, although they are perceived as healthy and fit, are at risk of mental health challenges…Nearly 32% of Canadian national team athletes training for the 2020 Summer Olympics reported symptoms of depression, while 19% reported symptoms of moderate to severe general anxiety (Poucher et al., 2021).” What is stopping athletes from reaching out for help? ⚽ “Lack of education and mental health literacy (MHL) including challenges in recognizing mental health symptoms and accessing available resources (King et al., 2023) or lacking awareness of support services, hindering athlete’s ability to seek help effectively (O’Keeffe et al., 2022).” What can we do to help? 🏑 Normalize conversations about mental health: “Renowned athletes such as Simone Biles, Michael Phelps, Bianca Andreescu, and Kelsey Mitchell speaking openly about their struggles encourage others to seek help without fear of judgment (King et al., 2023; Miller et al., 2023).” 🏈 "Educational initiatives can provide athletes with the necessary knowledge and tools to navigate the complexities of mental health.” 🏀 Encourage social Support Networks: “a person or group of people with whom an individual maintains various social connections and relationships, play a crucial role in help-seeking.” Recommendations for sports organizations, administrators and communities: ✔ Highlight available resources ✔ Cultivate a supportive culture ✔ Promote communication ✔ Implement initiatives #mentalhealthliteracy #athletes #mentalhealth #stigma #education
