You may have seen news stories this week about “pink cocaine” (or “tusi”). What do researchers know about this emerging drug so far, and what should the public be aware of? Read below ⬇ Despite its name, “pink cocaine” rarely contains cocaine. It's a mixture of synthetic drugs in which ketamine and drugs like MDMA, meth, and opioids, have been detected. Read more in a NIDA-supported article from NYU Grossman School of Medicine: https://lnkd.in/eFwZDuJX As with other emerging drugs, the mixture of drugs in “pink cocaine” varies greatly, which can lead to unpredictable health effects. Taking a mixture of drugs can also increase potential health risks. Learn more about the effects of emerging drugs: https://lnkd.in/egkiZ3cK Through programs like the National Drug Early Warning System (NDEWS), NIDA supports research to track the emergence of new drugs to help inform researchers, medical professionals, policymakers, and the public. This #TreatmentWeek, explore insights on opioid use disorder treatment. Research shows that higher doses of buprenorphine may improve recovery outcomes for people with opioid use disorder. Access to effective treatment options is critical for saving lives. https://go.nih.gov/uw7ik5y

A 🆕 #NIDA-funded study, based on data from Canada, found that #methadone outperforms #buprenorphine in helping people with opioid use disorder stay in treatment, which can be lifesaving. https://loom.ly/jngOUK4 Simon Fraser University JAMA Methadone was the first medication approved to treat opioid use disorder in the U.S. and is still one of the most effective. It is also the most used and most studied opioid use disorder medication in the world. Yet, in the United States, people with opioid use disorder continue to face many barriers in accessing methadone. These findings add to the evidence that greater access to methadone is needed to address the overdose crisis.
