Today, we're thinking about Tom Slaughter, who worked closely with us for ten years as our resident visual artist and dear friend of the organization. Tom passed ten years ago today, and we miss his incredible talent and friendship every day. "Everyday objects make me think of Tom. He was able to take the simplest forms and create the most iconic art. He was a brilliant NYC-based artist and I count myself lucky I got to work with him for 6 years. The New Victory style was created out of his extraordinary eye for color, shape and whimsy. Ten years has passed in the blink of an eye, but I think about him often with the fondest memories." - Alexis Buatti-Ramos, Assistant Director, Art & Design

It was a pleasure to host Alex Sarian in conversation about his new book THE AUDACITY OF RELEVANCE: CRITICAL CONVERSATIONS ON THE FUTURE OF ARTS AND CULTURE! Alex discussed creating a future for arts organizations built on community connections and influence. Tom Clark, Consul General of Canada in New York, and New 42 President and CEO Russell Granet (who was interviewed for the book) gave opening remarks before Alex spoke with Brooke Whitaker-Royster, Lead Strategist, Mid Monday Morning. Alex then moderated a panel with Ayesha Williams, Executive Director, The Laundromat Project; Stephanie Hill Wilchfort, Director and President, Museum of the City of New York; Kamilah Forbes, Executive Producer, Apollo Theater and James Claiborne, Deputy Director of Community Engagement at the Barnes Foundation. In this week’s My First Years at New 42, New 42 board member Sammy Lopez looks back at his time as part of the New 42 community. “Reflecting on my early years with New 42, I’m reminded of the resilience of this inspiring organization. This ghost light photo, taken from the edge of the stage during New Victory Theater’s reopening, perfectly captures that spirit. As a recently appointed board member during the pandemic, this particular reopening was especially significant—it marked my first time attending a New 42 event in an 'official' capacity. Being there, on 42nd Street, surrounded by talented artists and passionate supporters, felt like a powerful moment of renewal for the entire community. Since then, many more fun memories have been made, including sharing the step-and-repeat with my fellow board member pal, Christina Zagarino! It’s not just the events or performances that make New 42 remarkable, it’s the incredible people involved—dedicated, creative individuals who drive this organization forward." #WeAreNew42

In today's My First Years at New 42, hear from Artistic Director Mary Rose Lloyd about her work at the New Victory: "I remember my first day like it was yesterday, if yesterday was over 28 years ago. I set out to make sure whatever was on the New Victory stage would be the very best from around the world. I began traveling locally, nationally and internationally seeking out wonderful, sometimes strange, provocative, exciting, beautiful, surprising theater, dance, circus, puppetry, music and 'indescribable' performing arts for young and family audiences. For some of this work we made up quite a few genre labels like 'Xtreme Physical Theater' or 'Visual Acrobatics' and the like. I have always been taken by how everyone who works here welcomes a challenge and embraces a boundary-pushing taste in the live arts. My team and I curate our three artistic programs (New Victory, New Victory LabWorks and New Victory Dance) each season, but that’s just where the planning begins. We then work very closely with all of our departments: - Production to ensure each show looks amazing and that the artists visions are cared for - Communications to make sure we have or can get video and photographs and written materials that represent the show in all its glory and to help audiences understand what they’re coming to see - Education to assist with any insights that might help them create remarkable in-classroom and in-theater experiences - Development to assist in all of their essential fundraising projects around each show every season - Operations to confirm calendar dates and other needs of organizing a busy building schedule in both the New Victory and the New 42 Studios - Finance to bring clarity to the needs of artist and show-specific purchase order payments ; - Ticket Services to provide any information necessary so the terrific sales department can communicate about each show and answer any questions our ticket buyers may have. The Artistic Programming and General Management team always live in the future creating new seasons of New Victory Theater, New Victory Dance and LabWorks. Right now, we are busy planning what will happen in our 30th Anniversary season - 2025-2026. In the coming months we will begin the planning process and the ramp up to next season’s opening will begin. Each year is different but the mission stays the same: ' … to make extraordinary performing arts a vital part of everyone’s life from the earliest years onward.'"
