The Pittsburgh Foundation contributed a $150,000 impact loan to Pennsylvania BRIGHT. “This solar lease program is a vital step in providing low-income families with access to solar power, helping them reduce utility costs,” said Michael Yonas, Vice President of Community Partnerships and Learning at The Pittsburgh Foundation. “It aligns with The Pittsburgh Foundation's mission to empower communities and foster economic resilience. By breaking down barriers to renewable energy, we can create a more equitable future while supporting families in achieving financial stability.”

We were proud supporters and participants in last Friday's Newsapalooza, hosted by Point Park University's Andrew Conte, Ph.D. and the Center for Media Innovation at Point Park University at the Pittsburgh Playhouse. The day's sessions delved into serious issues in journalism like how people are receiving their news, the challenges of breaking through partisan information silos and echo chambers, and how the public's access to local issues has undergone a seismic shift with the folding of small newspapers nationwide. Thank you to all moderators and speakers including CBS News Chief Election and Campaign Correspondent Robert Costa; KDKA-TV's Political Editor Jon Delano; Pitt's Institute for Cyber Law, Policy, and Security's professors Lara Putnam and Elise Silva, PhD, MLIS; and legendary Boston Globe Media reporter, former Spotlight editor and current editor-at-large Walter "Robby" Robinson, who said, today "people see the affirmation they crave, not the information they need." And our Foundation's Vice President of Program and Community Engagement Michelle M. took part a panel discussing how philanthropy supports local news and our region's partnership with Press Forward. We hope this becomes an annual conference for our area.

Thank you to everyone who attended our annual New Philanthropic Leaders' Pitch-In Party last Thursday at the Energy Innovation Center in Uptown Pittsburgh. This year’s cohort chose to focus on small and midsize nonprofits in the Pittsburgh region that provide transitional housing opportunities for women of color and their families and we were thrilled to welcome HEARTH - North Hills Affordable Housing CEO Christy Pietryga, Naomi's Place President and CEO Dr. Regina Holley and SisTers PGH Founder and Executive Director Ciora Thomas to introduce their nonprofit organizations. $38,000 of pooled funding went to the three nonprofits from the cohort, and an additional $1,500 was distributed to the trio from the event and additional donations at the party. Congratulations to everyone on another terrific event. (Photos by Lamar Davis.)

We are thrilled to have you "on Board" as well, Tracy Certo. We know the invaluable experience and insight you will bring to our foundation after your tremendous success in publishing, most recently the founding of NEXTpittsburgh. Welcome!
I’m thrilled to share that I’ve joined the Board of Directors at The Pittsburgh Foundation. When I sold NEXTpittsburgh in December 2020, my first step was to open a donor-advised fund at TPF, the best way I knew to give back to the community that played such a crucial role in NEXT’s success. In 2022, I had the opportunity to participate in a Giving Circle focused on affordable housing, where we collaborated over five meetings to understand the nonprofit landscape and awarded $75k to several deserving organizations. Now, as a Board member, I’m excited to delve deeper into the important work TPF does to enhance Pittsburgh. I’m truly honored to be part of one of the oldest and largest community foundations in our country and so look forward to contributing to its impactful mission.

We continue to be proud partners with FISA Foundation and The Heinz Endowments for these important convenings around equity for all.
Earlier this week, FISA Foundation, The Heinz Endowments, and The Pittsburgh Foundation hosted the Fall 2024 RACE + DISABILITY Convening for our grantees and partners in southwestern PA, our second-in person convening of the year for the RACE + DISABILITY initiative. Disability advocate Patrick Cokley from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) was the keynote speaker, presenting an overview of disability rights history and sharing how he has incorporated tenets of disability justice into his work at RWJF. After the keynote, participants discussed challenges they encounter in advancing intersectional equity and took time to brainstorm solutions with their colleagues. It was a great opportunity to build new connections and validate our shared commitment to the work. Thank you to Common Cause Consultants for facilitating the convening. And thank you to everyone who attended! We look forward to the next convening!
