Throwback to last year when SFF made a $3 million investment to strengthen the Bay Area’s ecosystem of Latinx community organizers to help fight the region’s deep systemic inequities the pandemic exposed and deepened. Ten Latinx-led organizations that focus on service delivery, organizing, and advocacy work will receive $250,000 each in general operating grants over two years to further their work. About us
Founded in 1948, the San Francisco Foundation is one of the nation’s largest community foundations — a grantmaking public charity dedicated to improving life within a specific local region. Our mission is to mobilize resources and act as a catalyst for change to build strong communities, foster civic leadership, and promote philanthropy in the San Francisco Bay Area. Together with community leaders, nonprofits, and donors, we are committed to advancing racial equity and economic inclusion to ensure that everyone in the Bay Area has a chance to attend a good school, get a good job, live in a safe and affordable home, and have a strong political voice.

"Offering no excuses for missteps, intentional or not, I encourage the Bay Area community to stand firmly behind the Dream Keeper Initiative’s work, and the often heroic efforts of Black- and people of color-led organizations. Their on-the-ground impact is essential for the wellbeing of our entire region."

There’s a push from the ground up to strengthen civic participation, increase affordable housing, and secure resources for schools and communities. Supporting these grassroots efforts is an investment in power building. Read latest Candid op-ed co-authored by SFF's Chief Impact Officer Judith Bell and Amado Uno of California Calls on why trusting community organizers to build a multiracial democracy is a key factor for success. https://lnkd.in/eQDmtzD4

We remember Martin Paley, former SFF CEO who passed away on September 12. Martin brought to SFF a fierce passion for social justice, and a commitment to those whom our systems leave behind – values that remain central to SFF’s work today. As SFF’s second CEO (then called Director), Paley deepened our commitment to public interest law, the arts, and the environment. During his tenure, SFF provided more funding to LGBTQIA+ organizations than any other foundation in the country, and seed funded powerful disability rights organizations, including the Center for Independent Living in Berkeley, which bestowed Paley with its Ed Roberts Award in 2021. In 1981, he helped introduce a fellowship program to provide early-career community leaders with exposure to philanthropy. Four decades later, more than 100 community leaders have participated in that program, now called the Multicultural Fellowship Program, which counts current SFF CEO Fred Blackwell as one of its alumni.
