We are so moved by this tribute that we had to share. 💚 At graduation, a Summit parent compared a Summit students' journey to a short story by Jerome Ruillier called "Four Little Corners" that describes the challenges of a box living in a world made for spheres. Please watch the video and/or read the transcription below: Children with learning differences are like the box in Ruillier's story; they are boxes having to navigate a world built for spheres. The spheres are able to move in and out of their spherical spaces seamlessly while the boxes keep getting blocked, and no matter how hard they try they just can’t fit through that spherical door. They might try changing themselves, but that doesn't work. Others may try to change them, just as the circles in the story suggested cutting off the square's corners. But that doesn't work, either. That is where a school like Summit comes in. We all have our unique stories about how our children ended up at Summit but there is a common thread…our kids are boxes. They didn’t fit in the spherical world and their schools weren’t able to help them navigate learning effectively. Then you arrive at Summit and instead of being the only box, you have a school FILLED with boxes and no one is trying to change you into something you are not. In Ruillier's story, the circles finally realized that they needed to cut corners into the circular door so the box could fit through. However, the story for our boxes is slightly different. In our story, because of you and your dedication, the boxes change the shape of the door themselves. The faculty and staff at Summit spend countless hours equipping the students with tools to change the shape of the door. These learning strategies allow them to create a door that allows them to walk through that door and experience everything the spheres do…without changing who they are in the process. #learningdifferences #dyslexia #education #independentschool #graduation

👏 Day 2 of congratulating our amazing eighth grade students on their high school selections. Yes, SELECTIONS. These students had choices because they are bright and confidently demonstrate their academic abilities because they learned HOW they learn and they use strategies that work for their learning profiles. We are so proud of their academic progress, maturity, and confidence. With only three weeks left of school, they are ready to launch and are prepared for success in high school and beyond. Calling all Artists! Entries are now being accepted for the 2024 Artists Without Limits Art Exhibit. This year's theme is "Rewriting the Narrative." Learning differences like dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia are not visible and not widely understood by the general population. At The Summit School, we strive to "rewrite the narrative" and spread awareness that students with learning differences can achieve educational success and ultimately choose their own professional paths. They are not limited! A beloved alumni student, Nina DeAngelo, was committed to rewriting the narrative and consistently exhibited at the Artists Without Limits Exhibit. Sadly, Nina passed away in October 2023 due to complications from long-term medical issues. It is in her honor that Summit is spreading the word for the Call for Entries. Let's make Nina proud! You can find more information and entry rules here: https://lnkd.in/eYK_iw5Q #thesummitschool #learningdifferences #artistswithoutlimits #advocate #artexhibit

Today's DC Field Trip looked a little different for these four students and their teacher. They were on a special assignment to meet Senator Van Hollen's and Senator Cardin's staff members on Capitol Hill. By sharing their school experiences, they represented Summit well, explaining to our Senators' staff why a Summit education is so important for students with learning differences. #thesummitschool #learningdifferences #independentschool #capitolhill #advocate #fieldtrip

Thank you to everyone who supported and attended Summit's 35th Anniversary Bash! Through sponsorships, tickets, auction items, and a silent paddle raise, together we raised $160,427 for The Summit School and student technology for our new Academic Center. 👏 Summit families, alumni, alumni families, faculty, and staff partied like it was 1989 to live music by The Reagan Years. In addition to raising funds for the school, the Bash was a wonderful gathering of old and new friends who all have a common bond - the impact of The Summit School for students who learn differently. #thesummitschool #learningdifferences #independentschool #35thanniversary #bash #fundraiser #reaganyears

In addition to partying like it was 1989 at our 35th Anniversary Bash, we recognized our school’s founder, Dr. Jane Snider and this year’s E. Allen Robinson Awardee, Mark Sislen. We also shared this video that shows our students envisioning their futures, alumni achieving their goals, and the role that Summit plays in this important endeavor. Summit is embarking on its own important endeavor - a new state-of-the-art Academic Center so we can help more students who learn differently envision their future. At the Bash, we made great progress towards funding student technology, an important, but expensive component of our new Academic Center. Together, we raised $35,500 towards our goal of $50,000! If you would like to help us fund this important technology project, you can donate here: https://lnkd.in/evPFD8FB We appreciate your support! #thesummitschool #learningdifferences #bash #EnvisioningTheFuture

We may have some future engineers at The Summit School! Congratulations to the sixth grade students for designing and building a prototype model and then a life size boat out of just cardboard and duct tape. Today they put their designs to the test in an indoor pool! 👏 #thesummitschool #learningdifferences #independentschool #engineeringdesign #STEM #cardboardboats #sixthgrade

Last week The Summit School was recognized at the Maryland General Assembly for 35 years of educating and empowering bright students with dyslexia and other learning differences. It was such a fun experience for some of our T2 (8th Grade) students to attend and connect with our state lawmakers. Big thank you to Senator Sarah Elfreth and Delegate Seth Howard! The 35th Anniversary Celebrations continue on April 13th at our Bash! https://lnkd.in/eZvQ8yHf #thesummitschool #dyslexia #learningdifferences #35thanniversary #maryland #generalassembly
