Since 2014, Charlie Lovett '77 and the Lovett Foundation have donated $2,500 to Summit School, enabling the 9th grade class to make a gift to a local nonprofit organization. The students collaborate with our development office to learn about philanthropy, the Lovett Foundation, and deserving organizations in our community. Approximately 5-7 agencies submit a grant application to Summit. The students and staff review the applications, ask questions of the organizations, and have robust conversations about how to narrow the field. The 2024 recipient of the 9th Grade Philanthropy Project grant is the A. Bailey Legacy Foundation for Women. This philanthropic foundation celebrates and invests in the lives of women and girls of color through scholarships and education, award recognition, health development projects, humanitarian efforts, and mentor programs. Dr. Alicia Bailey accepted the grant at the Welcome New Alums Breakfast this morning. #SociallyResponsible #Honorable

High honor for Adelaide Jernigan '22! Jernigan, a junior at Bishops McGuiness, received an invitation to the 2024 U18 USA Basketball's Women's National Team Trials, which will begin on May 15 at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Jernigan is one of 26 players in the country—12 from the Class of 2024 and 14 from the Class of 2025—invited to compete for a spot on the 12-member team that will compete at the 2024 FIBA U18 Women's AmeriCup from June 17 to 23 in Bucaramanga, Colombia. "I'm very excited and very honored," said Jernigan, who was recently voted as the Winston-Salem Journal's girls basketball player of the year for the second straight season after averaging 19.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, three assists, and three steals per game this season. "There is no higher honor than playing for USA Basketball, and I'd really love to make the team." This is the second invitation she has received from USA Basketball to try out for one of its national teams. Way to go, Adelaide! #GirlsBasketball #WSNC #FIBA #WomensAmeriCup #USABasketball #SummitAlum
