Connecticut's businesses are strong, and our future is bright. At CBIA’s Annual Connecticut Economy Conference, our team reviewed the 2024 survey results from a panel of local business leaders as they discussed the challenges and opportunities that Connecticut businesses face in today’s economic landscape. We’re excited to continue our support for local businesses, ensuring they have the tools and resources needed to manage their bills and enroll in energy efficiency programs, promoting a sustainable future for all.
About us
United Illuminating (UI) is a New Haven-based regional electric distribution company established in 1899. UI is engaged in the purchase, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity and related services to more than 341,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in the Greater New Haven and Bridgeport areas. Meet Mike Joye, a Chief Lineman at UI with 21 years of service. On August 17, while attending the Milford Oyster Festival with his family, Mike heard customers at Archie Moore’s Bar & Restaurant calling for a paramedic to help a woman choking on food. Without hesitation, Mike rushed inside and performed the Heimlich maneuver, successfully clearing her airways. Mike credits his quick and effective response to the annual CPR training all lineworkers receive at UI. Thank you, Mike, for your swift and effective intervention. Your ability to remain calm under pressure exemplifies the qualities of a true hero. We are grateful for your commitment to our organization and the community we serve. #TeamUI

#TeamUI had the privilege of attending the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Long Wharf Floodwall workshop to learn about the New Haven project, which aims to protect our community from coastal flooding. With rising sea levels and severe coastal storms driven by climate change, such initiatives are crucial. At UI, we are investing in three flood management programs to safeguard our coastal substations from flooding and storm damage. Our talented lineworkers showcased their technical skills and safety training at this year’s Linemen Rodeo, held at our Trumbull Training Yard. With family, friends, and colleagues cheering them on, they tackled real-world tasks such as climbing, working off poles, using hot sticks, and performing hurt man rescues. Our top qualifying crews will be heading to the 40th annual International Lineman’s Rodeo in October in Overland Park, KS, to compete against the best teams from across the U.S.!

Congratulations to Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo Director Gregg Dancho on his retirement! After nearly 45 years of dedicated service, Gregg has left an indelible mark on our organization and the community. Over the past 24 years, our company has collaborated with him and his team to support educational programs, sponsorships, and green energy renovations of the Zoo’s facilities, made possible through Connecticut’s Neighborhood Assistance Act (NAA) Tax Credit Program. Gregg’s unwavering commitment to the Bridgeport community and his passion for wildlife have truly transformed the Zoo into a premier destination. We extend our heartfelt thanks for his incredible contributions and dedication to the communities we serve.
