HVAC--Making things happen in Northeast Ohio. 😎

Director of Sales at Wilson Plumbing and Heating

To get where we want to go, we have to do things we’ve never done. Anybody who has ever spoken to John Wilson (and that’s a shocking amount of people) know that HVAC has been a struggle here for a long time. In October for the first time, we had an HVAC service technician be the top producer in the company, which is a crazy feat. We also crossed $1mm in completed revenue for the month in HVAC. It’s a milestone moment for sure, but it’s just the beginning. The rest of the business units exceeded expectations as well, but we’re used to that success. Today we’re going to celebrate this October win with a Browns game courtesy of our friends at Daikin, then we’re going to show up to work tomorrow and be even better in November.

YOUR Business Coach! THE Executive Coach! Building YOU into a Better Businessperson One Step at a Time!

Action > Inaction John Wilson of Wilson Plumbing and Heating had plenty of experience and business savvy to talk about in this episode. For John it is really simple; know who your customer is, solve the customer pain points, be able to differentiate what you do from all the others, and be available to do what you do. THEN GO DO SOMETHING. That’s the best advice John Wilson can give. Doesn’t have to be big action. It just has to be YOUR action. Go, actually do something. That is the secret John will openly share with any and all willing to listen. John has been around the business for a lifetime. He took the reigns in 2016. Since taking over the business in 2016 John has been able to grow from $1,000,000 in annual sales with 8 employees to a juggernaut of a home services company with $26,000,000+ in revenue and 130 employees. He knows a thing or two about doing something and making a difference. Wilson Plumbing and Heating has experienced 26X growth in 8 years. That is a rocket ship. And there are no plans to slow down or stop. There are plenty of good reasons why John and his team have seen the success of these past 8 years. The actions that rise to the top include adopting technology, executing early, and building an amazing team to do the things needed. He saw that technology can make for easier scheduling, logistic & production coordination, and digital marketing. Being able to move away from paper-based and whiteboard systems for managing schedules & technicians and into software programs that can accommodate large amounts of data quickly makes for a much more efficient way of getting trucks on the road to serve his growing client base. Marketing has been a big, concentrated investment for Wilson. John took a specific approach to the marketing efforts. Wilson focuses on the target market they want to work with and speaks directly to them with every message they deliver. They are a home services company. That is what they do and who they serve. So, they speak to them with clarity. Wilson Plumbing and Heating provides a strong value proposition; a differentiated offering that solves their customer’s pain point, availability, and unmatched quality.   Their customers know exactly what to expect when they hire Wilson to service their home. A nice addition to the company is being able to also attract the best talent in the industry because the technicians and specialists know who they are working for and why they come to work every day. This is a very insightful and educational episode. I want to thank John Wilson for being a part of the show and sharing so much with the audience. Please click here to view the full interview:               https://lnkd.in/g8d36jxb I encourage you to take a look at Wilson Plumbing and Heating – here is the contact information: The Wilson Companies: https://lnkd.in/gbpi-f5q John Wilson on X: https://lnkd.in/gxCrraWw LinkedIn: https://lnkd.in/ghwSXBzc

Building a $100M Home Service Business

That’s a wrap on September! September is always one of my least favorite months because it is typically slow at Wilson. This year was our best September yet for keeping busy. A few misses here and there but overall strong. When you’re moving fast - the numbers feel a bit strange. January was a record of all time, and I posted on here that we did as much in January as Wilson did in 2017. We went on to beat that record six times this year and we are wrapping September (historically a terrible month) around 6% higher than January (typically a good month). We are closing up around 35% growth over September 2023. Another big growth month in the books for ol Wilson. Our big wins this month: Gross margin was 5 points higher than August Our revenue was only slightly dipped to August (usually it’s a bit swing) We ran over budget on calls. Leads ain’t the issue! HVAC sales and service kept a full schedule despite being a shoulder season HVAC Service reported a profitable month for the first time in my memory - biiiig win! Amazing new talent added to nearly every department Areas to improve: Conversion rate was low - we can get leads but closing them has been a challenge across the business but seen especially in a few departments We learned A LOT this year and are starting to feel comfortable playing the game. Our next big benchmark is a $3M month which we see in our not too distant future!

Building a $100M Home Service Business

We didn’t have service managers a year ago. Now we have four and it’s been the revenue hack I wanted. It’s a system that took time to hone, but we’ve done it four times now by asking the important questions. What is their workflow? How do they gel with the team? What type of person are they and does that equal leadership? Can they handle our call-by-call system, where that service manager is in touch with the technician each step of the way to talk sales and service options? That org structure is just so big that we need that kind of constant contact for all of this to work as intended. But it's been an amazing system for everyone involved. Customers get service and treatment specific to their needs, technicians learn and grow from each call, and managers get their finger on the pulse of day-to-day work. #HVAC #Plumbing #Electrical
