World Development Report 2024 identifies what developing economies can do to avoid the “middle-income trap.” Lower-middle-income countries must go beyond investment-driven strategies—they must also adopt modern technologies and successful business practices from abroad and infuse them across their economies. Upper-middle-income countries need to accelerate the shift to innovation, by pushing the global frontiers of technology. This requires reconfiguring economic structures governing enterprises, labor, and energy use—in ways that enable greater economic freedom, social mobility, and political contestability. About us
The World Bank is a vital source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world. Our vision is to create a world without poverty on a livable planet. We are not a bank in the common sense; we are made up of two unique development institutions owned by 189 member countries: the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA). Each institution plays a different but collaborative role in advancing the vision of inclusive and sustainable globalization. The IBRD aims to reduce poverty in middle-income and creditworthy poorer countries, while IDA focuses on the world's poorest countries. Their work is complemented by that of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) and the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). Together, we provide low-interest loans, interest-free credits and grants to developing countries for a wide array of purposes that include investments in education, health, public administration, infrastructure, financial and private sector development, agriculture and environmental and natural resource management.

How could Generative AI impact jobs in Latin America and the Caribbean? A new The World Bank and International Labour Organization paper shows that 26-38% of jobs in the region could be exposed to GenAI, with 8-14% becoming more productive and 2-5% at the risk of full automation. In short, GenAI is more likely to transform jobs, than to fully replace workers. However, digital infrastructure gaps and inequalities could hinder this transformative impact. Effective policy design is crucial to leveraging GenAI for economic development. ➡️Read more here: https://ow.ly/yAXg50SO2ys

Advancing women’s leadership and enhancing women’s participation in local decision-making is a vital element of The World Bank Group’s new Gender Strategy. http://wrld.bg/qTGv50SNI1J We have launched a series of seminars on Women’s Leadership with our Executive Board focusing on community, business, thought, workplace and political leadership. During our inaugural seminar we explored lessons learned and engaged in an inspiring discussion on community leadership with Reema Nanavaty (SEWA, India) Hana Brixi, Nikolas Myint, Tauqir Shah and several other esteemed experts. The discussion provided valuable insights and recommendations for the implementation of the Gender Strategy, including the need to scale up investments in community-level leadership. Key takeaways include: 1. Investing in formal structures facilitate women’s inclusion in decision-making processes at the community level. 2. Building capacity by developing women’s leadership skills and organizing for collective strength and action is an essential complement to representation. 3. Supporting an enabling environment by involving local leaders, influencers, men, and boys helps shift social norms and address biases that hinder women’s progress. Looking forward to continuing conversations and engagements that advance women’s leadership across all sectors.

This week I had the honor of attending celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of the reconstruction of the historic Old Bridge in #Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Following the country's conflict in the 1990s, IDA was instrumental in coordinating funding for the bridge's reconstruction, in addition to launching multiple emergency projects that helped restore critical infrastructure and access to healthcare facilities and schools. Today, only 28 years after the conflict, Bosnia and Herzegovina is an IDA donor. The country's story exemplifies the power of solidarity, resilience, and the impact of IDA, and offers key lessons as we pursue a robust #IDA21 replenishment. Read more about my trip to Mostar and how #IDAworks in an Op-Ed I wrote with World Bank Vice President for Europe and Central Asia Antonella Bassani in Euractiv: https://lnkd.in/e3Kdpjrv #IDAworks
