About us

The Come Up highlights successful business owners’ come-up stories in an easy-to-read format. Unlike a lot of entrepreneurship content, The Come Up was started with the purpose of sharing how successful people got there without glossing over the missteps and failures along the way. A lot of business content is overly reductive, and social media is filled with the "Here's how I made $10M in 10minutes" type of content... Those type of reductive stories really oversimplify the journey and if consumed too frequently, can cause more stress and anxiety than inspiration. (I should know, they stress me the hell out!) The Come Up aims to share stories of those in-between moments - the "I'm not sure this is going to work but I'll push ahead anyway" moments that anyone who runs a business has felt, and yet is rarely talked about. Those stories rarely get told, but they're likely the most important to tell. We frequently dive into growth tactics, marketing strategies, and what finally made things click to get them to where they are today! In addition to this, we frequently host events for the entrepreneur community - things like workshops, dinners and parties. I remember stumbling upon Beachman’s crowdfunding campaign during the early pandemic days and being instantly hooked. Their cafe racers retrofitted as e-bikes were unlike anything I’d seen before! Imagine cruising on an e-bike that would make you feel like Steve McQueen in The Great Escape!!! The branding, the aesthetic, the product—everything was spot on. Fast forward a few years, and I’m thrilled to have had the pleasure of getting to know Ben Taylor, one part of the dynamic duo behind the Beachman brand. The story behind Beachman is as awesome as the bikes — my jaw was literally on the floor throughout the interview, hearing about the incredible obstacles they navigated to make their vision a reality. Check out the full article in the link below and, if you're in the market for an e-bike (or motorcycle), look no further! 🔗https://lnkd.in/gFJnDmtT

I've been a fan of Matthew Bertulli long before I ever met him – first as an early supporter of Lomi during its crowdfunding days and later through reading his weekly newsletter. What I didn’t know is that before launching Pela, and shortly after, Lomi, he had already built and sold a 100+ person eCommerce agency. On top of all that, he has one of the biggest DTC podcasts in the world! His journey from running an agency to leading two product companies is filled with lessons, and I’m honoured to feature him in the most recent issue of The Come Up, where he shares the differences between running an agency vs. product business, the challenges of scaling and raising money, and the reality of balancing multiple ventures. Read the full story in the link below, and be sure to check out his newsletter, podcast, or businesses! 🔗https://lnkd.in/gU7EskqM

Really pumped to share the most recent issue of The Come Up - an incredible interview with Babe Creative founder Kyla Muratore! Kyla’s refreshing honesty about not having a grand exit strategy or a rigid plan really resonated with me... As she puts it: “I don’t know if it’s a change since COVID, but my perspective has changed in regards to having a bigger plan, because who ****ing knows, right? Things can change so quickly…” What I found most inspiring is her genuine passion for her work. It's clear she really cares about her clients - describing her role as being like “fairy godmothers” to the female founders and small businesses they support, guiding them towards success. I love how Kyla has embraced the journey, focusing on quality and impact over rigid plans. It’s a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. Check out the full article here: and follow Kyla to see more of the amazing work she’s doing! 🔗https://lnkd.in/edhucwV4

After 2+ years of interviewing people for The Come Up, somebody finally wanted to put me on the spot to answer questions myself. It's definitely a lot different being in the hot seat vs. being the one asking the questions! From housing, to transit - including me accidentally calling out the CEO of Metrolinx - it was a lot of fun to join Iain Montgomery for his Challenger City TO series to discuss how Toronto can be a better place. Let's face it - we all want Toronto to be a better place!

If I'm honest, I didn't fully think this Challenger City TO thing through when I started it. There's ideas for where it might go, but part of the magic of this stuff is just seeing what happens. My next interviewee has that kind of spirit to what he does too, and it seems to work! Alex Tribe is not your typical urbanist type, having started out as a DJ, hosting parties, doing marketing events etc. before becoming one of those go to people helping small businesses and bootstrap founders. We crossed paths when he helped host some of the Innovators Social Club events, some of which centered around topics like stations of the future. It turned out he's passionate about the challenges municipalities face, creating products in that space too. We talked about the growing pains Toronto is facing as it goes from mid size city to global contender, how the thinking must change to support that, get more comfortable taking risks and creating the environment that encourages others to do so too. You can hear and read more if you're digging this here. As well as catch up on the series so far. https://lnkd.in/gkaVgqyi

Taking on giants like Starbucks in the RTD coffee space isn't for the faint-hearted, but David Schneiderman from Two Bears Coffee has pushed forward with "80s baby" grit: "And I feel broke because we are fighting for shelf-space in that fridge against Coca Cola... But you know what? They've been around so long, they’re kind of like Suge Knight - he used to be a big, scary dude, but he got older and he’s not as big and scary as he once was."
