For more than a century, ThedaCare has been committed to finding a better way to deliver serious and complex healthcare to patients throughout northeast Wisconsin. The organization serves over 235,000 patients annually and employs more than 7,000 healthcare professionals throughout the region. ThedaCare has seven hospitals located in Appleton, Neenah, Berlin, Waupaca, Shawano, New London and Wild Rose as well as 35 clinics in nine counties. ThedaCare is the first in Wisconsin to be a Mayo Clinic Care Network Member, giving our specialists the ability to consult with Mayo Clinic experts on a patient’s care. ThedaCare is a non-profit healthcare organization with a level II trauma center, comprehensive cancer treatment, stroke and cardiac programs as well as a foundation dedicated to community service.

A new program being implemented at seven ThedaCare Hospital Emergency Departments provides help and hope for those experiencing an opioid use disorder. The Overdose Response Protocol aims to help people safely recover from any level of inappropriate use of opioids such as fentanyl, heroin or oxycodone. “When a person comes to the Emergency Department, our teams take extra time to ask an additional question about that person’s opioid use during the intake screening,” Dr. Ezra Lyon, MD, Associate Medical Director for Integrative Addiction Treatment and Family Medicine Practitioner at ThedaCare Physicians-Waupaca explained. “We hope that by asking the question, we can connect with people who may be experiencing an opioid use disorder and make it easier for them to seek help.” If a person does respond to the question and it is determined they are experiencing an opioid use disorder, teams can encourage them to engage with the ThedaCare Overdose Response Protocol and get them started on a path to recovery. Recently, nurses participating in ThedaCare's Nurse Residency Program created "Rainy Day Boxes." A Rainy Day Box is a box of notes, cards, or memorabilia that cheer you up on those difficult days. They could be from a patient, peer, or boss - anything that will bring a smile to your face. The Nurse Residency program is designed to facilitate and support the transition of newly licensed registered nurses in their first year of practice. This program provides a structured learning environment with opportunities for new nurses to gain essential skills. It includes hands-on training and professional development opportunities to ensure new nurses are well-prepared and confident in delivering high-quality care to patients.
