Check out this story on NJ Spotlight News highlighting the hard and heart work that New Jersey food pantries are doing every day - proud to stand alongside them! “Like every other food pantry or soup kitchen, we are seeing numbers that are off the charts,” said Derek Smith, executive director of the Franklin Food Bank, a pantry in Franklin Township, Somerset County. “While some prices may be coming down, what most of our folks struggle with is being able to pay these ridiculous prices for rent and groceries. Those numbers are not moving.” Smith’s pantry gives food to any township residents who ask for it, regardless of their background. “The reality is now that we have just as many people coming to our doors who are homeless as those who just finished going to Stop & Shop where they spent $200 which gets them a lot less than it did last year. So they come to supplement at our location,” he said. The Franklin Food Bank now serves about 100 families a day, more than three times the number of three years ago. The increase is driven by increased demand, and by the fact that the pantry, like others around the state, is doing a better job of telling people that it’s there and ready to help them, Smith said. The improved marketing, together with better coordination with other parts of the food-assistance ecosystem, is allowing the system to respond more efficiently to food insecurity, he said. “What is promising — and what we are seeing at this event today — is a broader community effort to help address these challenges,” Smith said.

Manuel E. Riaño with the wise words today, check it out! #climateweek #sustanability #sustainablefoodsystems #foodbank
This week, as global and local leaders gather in NYC for the United Nations General Assembly and for the Climate Week, critical conversations will take place on shaping a sustainable future for food. Key topics include regenerative organic agriculture, integrated food systems, and the urgent need to reduce food waste. We at The Franklin Food Bank will be tuning in, networking, and reflecting on the outcomes to adapt them to our local efforts. But while those big-picture conversations are happening, let me show you some "food action" in real time! Last week, our friends from Magyar Bank joined us at the market for a beautification project. Not only did they do an incredible job cleaning up, but they also demonstrated immense generosity by donating $2,500! Thank you, Magyar Bank, for your continued support of the families we serve. By the end of the week, our Operations Department celebrated a milestone by opening a newer, bigger, and cozier welcome office for our neighbors. This space will provide us with an opportunity to offer a warm, dignified reception while also hosting some of our wraparound services with health partners. Huge shoutout to everyone involved in making these achievements a reality! These actions resonate deeply with our mission of serving the community with dignity and respect. #UNGA #ClimateWeek #FoodSystems #RegenerativeAgriculture #NoMoreFoodWaste #CommunityImpact #LocalAction #Nonprofit #Gratitude #HugerForNone Alexa Habib, Jennifer Shannon United Nations Keli Watkins Dauna Jendrek Derek Smith Allison O'Brien

We are honored to receive the award for Somerset County Business Partnership's inaugural Legacy Awards as Nonprofit Business of the Year Award! #nonprofitoftheyear Congratulations to our fellow winners! Thank you Malik Lyons for this wonderful feature! He [Derek Smith] noted the diverse backgrounds of those who rely on the food bank, saying, "There are some people in this room that are a divorce away, medical issue away, a layoff away. That's the reality of food insecurity that we're dealing with right now."

We love to see this! Thank you Manuel E. Riaño for highlighting an epic #FeedFranklinFestival
Last week was full of amazing moments at the The Franklin Food Bank ! First up, we had an incredible nutrition workshop on Friday with our amazing Development Director (and professional Chef👩🍳) Allison O'Brien. Not only did we indulge in a delicious and nutritious Zoodle Sauce (think fine layers of zucchini and onions topped with creamy ricotta cheese and fresh basil), but we also learned so much about flavors, cooking tricks, and even proper knife handling. A huge shout-out to Allie and Keli Watkins who is doing an incredible job leading our programs at FFB! Then, Saturday brought us the Fantastic Feed Franklin Festival! The Township showed up with mad love, and it was so great to see some of the FFB staff, volunteers, and trustees having fun and lending a hand. A massive thank you again to Allie and Dauna Jendrek for their next-level event coordination—there were so many moving parts, and they made it all come together beautifully. And an extra special thanks to the Consiglio family (Ron Consiglio) for hosting such an epic evening in their fabulous farm. This weekend was a great reminder: Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much. On behalf of every family we serve a heartfelt THANK YOU! #FranklinFoodBank #CommunityLove #TeamWork #NutritionMatters #ThankYouAll #TogetherWeCan #nonprofit #socialgood
