Making Miami More Inclusive
About us
Formerly known as Community Habilitation Center, the WOW Center was organized in the early 1970s thanks to the efforts of a small group of parents of children with developmental disabilities. This group of parents were facing the reality that after their sons and daughters graduated high school, their options were limited. There were not many programs or services available for their family member in others for them to keep learning, developing and ultimately achieving their goals, the WOW Center was created to meet this need in our community. The WOW Center currently supports and serves over 150 adults with developmental disabilities from Miami-Dade County who range in ages from 21 to 71. Since its founding, The WOW Center has broadened its programs and activities and amassed an enviable reputation throughout South Florida. The purpose of all The WOW Center services is to offer support, guidance and encouragement to adults with developmental disabilities regarding their personal choices, abilities, growth and ultimately, independence. We provide individuals with programs designed to help them learn skills in order for them to lead meaningful and productive lives, explore their potential, and develop a sense of community. To attain these goals, the agency offers the following work and education programs: Life and Work Skills, Technology Lab, Art, Sports and Fitness, Music Therapy, Community Based Education, Supported Employment, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Social Services, Special Olympics, and a Kiwanis Aktion Club. What an amazing week at The WOW Center Miami! Started our week with a visit from Rachel Feliciano-Evans from Ferguson. We are so excited to partner with this amazing company on our new building project. Our Culinary Program, which lasts 8 weeks, has come to an end, and 12 individuals have graduated! Chef Deborah Pedrini, whose dedication is truly remarkable, once again worked her magic, giving hope and opportunity to our participants as they pursue their dreams. Yesterday, The Marlins Foundation hosted us for an exciting midweek ballgame, adding a special touch to our week. We’re grateful to Myrna Y. Vaca, MBA, President of the Marlins Foundation, and Anthony Barroso, MS of the Miami Marlins and loanDepot park for their warm hospitality. Today is ADA Day, and we were thrilled to perform at Government Center in honor of this historic celebration. ADA Day commemorates the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, enacted on July 26, 1990. This landmark legislation marks a pivotal moment in our journey toward inclusivity and equality. Today, we celebrate the progress made in accessibility and advocate for ongoing efforts to create a world where everyone, regardless of ability, can thrive.
