Do you dread spending time with your in-laws? Maybe your mother-in-law takes jabs at your cooking or your father-in-law questions your parenting style. If so, you may have toxic in-laws. Dr. Denitrea Vaughan, LPC-S with Thriveworks shared her insights with Parade on what makes an in-law toxic and how to deal with them. “When it comes to navigating toxic in-laws, sometimes you just have to remind yourself that you can’t change them,” Dr. Vaughan said. "Understand and accept the fact that you do not have the power to change them, and they may never change. When in their presence, avoid sensitive topics, try to find common ground when you can, and remember to engage in self-care before and after family events.” Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/emBm5Pib

As a parent, wanting to shower your child with praise can feel instinctual. However, some experts say that too much praise in childhood can have negative effects that last into adulthood. Thriveworks psychologist Dr. Connally Barry recently shared insights with Parade on how overpraising children can shape their future selves. "Children either meet the expectations set by their parents’ praise or they simply don’t," Dr. Barry explains, "Having high ideals for a child is one thing, but placing them on a high pedestal could set them up for a deep sense of inadequacy if they do not feel they could ever meet these expectations." Thriveworks therapist Dee Jacobi-Edwards shared her thoughts with Care.com on the mental health benefits of hobbies for seniors. “Nowadays, older adults are not their grandparents — many were active in their younger days and want to stay that way,” said Jacobi-Edwards. “Regular movement is important for overall wellness and can reduce the risk of various physical and mental health issues.” Check out the full story here: https://lnkd.in/esa6CiiF

As we age, it’s not uncommon to grow apart from the extended family, such as cousins, we spent so much time with as kids. However a recent TikTok trend is seeing adults bringing back the ‘cousin sleepover.’ Monica Cwynar, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with Thriveworks, recently shared her thoughts with Parents.com on the importance of these family gatherings. Having intentional family time is important. One way to do that is to create traditions. Cwynar says, “Establish traditions or rituals that hold personal significance for your family, such as sharing stories, playing games, or cooking a special meal together.” Check out the full article here: https://lnkd.in/e9HqZsRi

Whether it gives you the ick or you find it soothing, ASMR has evolved from a little known niche experience to a social phenomenon that has the potential to help cope with anxiety and even aid in sleep. James Lavino, a counselor and board-certified music therapist with Thriveworks spoke with PhillyVoice.com on why the tingling sensations of ASMR might be beneficial to mental health. "I think that part of ASMR is being able to regulate the physical self in a way that's calming," Lavino said. "'Come back to the present moment. Forget about what might be, what should be, the way things are supposed to be. And come back to the breath. Come back to the body.’” Take a look at the full story here: https://lnkd.in/evRqnuiJ

The back-to-school season can be fun and exciting but for some students, it can mean stress and anxiety. According to Thriveworks’ data, demand for child therapy has increased 32% over the past year and with a further spike of 12.5% predicted as children across the country return to school. Alejandra Galindo, LMFT with Thriveworks joined KIAH-TV in Houston to discuss why we might be seeing these numbers and ways to support our kids as they head back to class. Do you ever feel like you need a vacation after you return from vacation? Getting away can often feel like you have to jam activities into every second of your day. Thriveworks therapist, Willow McGinty, spoke with HuffPost on a new travel trend called “soft travel” that encourages slow slow slow instead of go go go vacations and how this trend can benefit mental health “Soft travel can help us get the kind of rest we need and help us to develop the boundary between our authentic self and the person we need to be to accomplish our professional goals,” McGinty said. “Soft travel offers us an opportunity to slow down, take stock of our needs and engage in activities that rejuvenate us for our daily life.” Take a look at the full article here: https://lnkd.in/drUETn4f
