Get ready! Phase 1 of Portland International Airport is opening on August 14th, 2024. The massive 9-acre redevelopment utilizes #masstimber in an unprecedented application. Totaling 3.5 million board feet, the roof is comprised of 80-foot-long glulam beams and 35,000 pieces of intricately fabricated lattice. This project team worked closely with regional suppliers across 10 forests to promote local economic development and sustainable forestry practices. Live trees and flora intertwined with beautiful wood textures create a deep, immersive connection to nature. The intent is to let visitors feel as if they are walking through the iconic forests of the Pacific Northwest. Timberlab provided procurement strategy, custom fabrication, and mass timber installation expertise. Employee Spotlight: Daniel Haxton Daniel Haxton, Timberlab's Plant Manager, was pivotal in launching our first fabrication facility in Portland, Oregon, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the unprecedented challenges, Daniel ensured that Timberlab’s first CNC machine arrived and could begin operations on some of our most significant projects at the time, including fabrication for the 9-acre mass timber roof system at Portland International Airport. His leadership has been key to the success of the fabrication and assembly team. With a focus on expert craftsmanship and operational excellence, Daniel oversees the logistics and workflow of the Portland fabrication facility, helping our team deliver quality custom glulam across the U.S. Timberlab.com/careers #masstimber #masstimberconstruction #timberconstruction #cnc #cncmachine #wooddesign #woodbuilding #timberbuilding #glulam #crosslaminatedtimber #clt #cltbuilding #forestproducts #forestnetwork #forestproud #portland #oregon #manufacturing

Our team recently celebrated the groundbreaking of the Schnitzer PSU Art + Design Building. Designed by LEVER Architecture, the 98,000-square-foot facility will be Portland State University's first mass timber building. The structure emphasizes accessibility and educational equity, with light-filled classrooms, studios, and galleries. Mass timber was selected to create more vibrant learning spaces while also tapping into the region's growing network in timber innovation and design. The glued-laminated timber (glulam) for Portland State University will be tribal-sourced from Yakama Forest Products. A big thank you to all the community members and leaders who attended this groundbreaking. The excitement across sectors showcases the potential for widespread adoption of mass timber and highlights the growing demand for low-carbon building materials. Our team is thrilled to be a part of this project. Building for the Future: Reducing Embodied Carbon in Multifamily Construction The "Return to Form" building study highlights the power of Mass Timber structural systems as a game-changer for embodied carbon reduction in multifamily residential construction. When comparing three structural systems—mass timber, cold-formed steel (CFS), and concrete—the findings are clear: Mass Timber reduces the whole building Global Warming Potential (GWP) by 21% compared to CFS and 25% compared to concrete. Focusing just on the residential structure above the Level 4 concrete podium, the mass timber system's GWP is 73% less than CFS and 83% less than concrete! These reductions are credited to mass timber’s lower manufacturing impact, natural ability to store biogenic carbon, and reduction in finish materials. Mass timber's construction speed is a major advantage! It can be built two months faster than CFS and over four months faster than concrete, cutting both time, cost, and embodied carbon. It is critical to consider holistic construction costs and speed of construction in cost estimating. While the mass timber material had a significant cost premium, when considering the whole building construction cost and speed of construction, the mass timber building premium is only 1.8% compared to CFS and 0.2% compared to concrete. This study illustrates that we don’t need to choose between embodied carbon cost and dollar cost - we can prioritize both. The Orange County Sanitation District HQ features a technically sophisticated mass timber roof, utilizing glulam beams arranged in a beautiful diagonal grid pattern. HDR engineered this structural system to reduce material use while maintaining optimal load distribution across the expansive roof area. The exposed glulam elements not only enhance the architectural aesthetic but also serve functional purposes by optimizing lateral stability and accommodating the long-span requirements of the building in a seismically prone region. This design solution demonstrates mass timber's versatility by providing a resilient and visually striking framework that integrates well with the project's sustainability goals. The Advanced Technology and Applied Science (ATAS) is a 52,000-square-foot building at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, California. Timberlab recently completed the mass timber installation for this project, which features some stunning double-curved glulam beams. The mass timber used in this project is entirely Alaskan Yellow Cedar (AYC), which typically has a lighter and more modern aesthetic. We can't wait to show you the finished building!
